Three years after his previous album reached #1, Mark Knopfler is back at the summit of the German LP chart with "Tracker". Benefiting from the support of one Ed Sheeran, US rapper Hoodie Allen registers his first chart entry and his first hit in Germany in the shape of "All About It". The catchy track debuts at #9.

Over the last few weeks Germany's music scene was shaken by the decision of Andreas Kümmert, the former winner of The Voice of Germany, to decline to represent the country at the Eurovision contest this May in Vienna despite participating in the competition for Germany's entry at the music show and winning the vote of Germans with a clear majority. Kümmert, who, let's face it, would have fallen into oblivion if he hadn't appeared in the contest, decided that he could not stand on the stage in Austria and thus cleared the way for runner-up Ann Sophie to go instead. Germans, however, seem still to like his winning song as "Heart of Stone" soars from #84 to #12 in its second week in the countdown. "Simple Man", Kümmert's finale song from The Voice of Germany, peaked at #2.

British newcomer James Bay makes it inside the top twenty this week with his "Hold Back The River" going up eight to #14. "Heartbreak Song" of Kelly Clarkson advances two to #16, while David Guetta scores his 22 top 20 single in Germany with "What I Did For Love". The song, which features the vocals of Emeli Sande, climbs two to #19. It is thus the second appearance of Emeli inside the top 20.

German hip hop band Die Orsons have had two singles inside the German top 100 so far, with the bigger of them being the #34 peak of "Horst & Monika" from 2012. Now they are definitely on a better form with "Schwung In Die Kiste" entering at #23 just a couple of weeks after "What's Goes?" made a brief chart appearance at the lower end of the countdown.

Swiss singer Stefanie Heinzmann was last in the German chart in 2012 with "Diggin’ in the Dirt", which peaked at #12. She is now back with new material as "In The End" debuts this week at #25 to be her sixth top 30 hit in the country.

I've mentioned Ann Sophie earlier due to her unexpected triumph at the selection of Germany's song for this year's Eurovision. The track in question, called "Black Smoke", arrives this week at #29. Hopefully it will gain in recognition as the contest approaches.

Pitbull and Ne-Yo's "Time Of Our Lives" advances further, this week to #32 from #43, while "Elastic Heart" of Sia continues its slow ascent by two notches to #35. "Up" of Olly Murs and Demi Lovato gains eleven, justifying its title, and is at #39 in its third week on the chart.

Also new inside the top 50 we can find "Lean On" at #42, the latest of Major Lazer with the help of DJ Snake and MO. So far Major Lazer has been in the top 40 with "Watch Out for This (Bumaye)", peak #27, in 2013.

At #45, up twelve, Maroon 5 improved on their #49 peak two weeks ago with "Sugar".

And finally, this week sees the comeback of Carly Rae Jepsen to the charts as her new single "I Really Like You" debuts at #50. Carly has had two hits on her account - the modern evergreen "Call Me Maybe" (peak #3) and the duet with Owl City "Good Time" (peak #11).

The Album Chart

Though her single career nowadays is more miss than hit, Madonna has managed with ease to top the German charts with her 13th studio album "Rebel Heart". It thus raises the number of number one LPs of Madonna in Germany to 12. This all comes to the expense of Howard Carpendale, with the veteran schlager singer failing once again to score its first number one album in Germany with "Das ist unsere Zeit" debuting at #2. Also new in the top ten we have rapper Sudden and "Superkraefte" at #4.

German Chart Comments - Issue Date 13.03

Ellie Goulding clocks up a full month on top of the German singles chart with "Love Me Like You Do", followed for yet another time by "Cheerleader" of Omi. "FourFiveSeconds" moves up two to #3 this week to become the first ever top-three single of Kanye West in Germany. As for Rihanna the song is her 13th appearance in the top three, while the hit manages to register the same peak as Sir Paul McCartney's previous top-three single "Hope of Deliverance" from the early 90s.

In its third week on the chart, Philip George returns to the top ten with his club anthem "Wish You Were Mine" rising six to #6 to beat its #7 debut three weeks ago.

Though she undoubtedly is a music force everyone should acknowledge and despite the fact that her forthcoming tour will be more than successful, the feeling that Madonna has once again failed to score a big chart hit remains. Her new offering "Living For Love" may be soaring 41 places to #40 but the chances that it is going to be forgotten in a week or two are more than great. Madonna was last in the chart with "Give Me All Your Luvin’" which peaked at #8. Unfortunately her previous LP produced no other charting singles in Germany.

Veteran German musician Herbert Grönemeyer is back with the second single from his "Dauernd jetzt" album. "Fang mich an" arrives in at #41, while the pilot track from the LP called "Morgen" debuted at #5.

The latest collaboration between Pitbull and Ne-Yo called "Time Of Our Lives" enters the top 50 in its second week in the chart, by going up to #43 from #72. Pitbull's previous single "Fireball" reached #22, while Ne-Yo was last in the top 100 with "Forever Now", peak #64. The two singers have collaborated before on "Give me Everything", which was a number-two smash in 2011.
Video

It has taken some time until "Up", the second single from the current album of Olly Murs to be released in Germany. Now the duet with Demi Lovato moves up eighteen in its second week inside the top 100 and ranks at #50. "Wrapped Up", the previous single of Olly, peaked at #11. Demi's best performing single in Germany is "Wouldn’t Change a Thing", peaking at #28 in 2010.

Steven Wilson returns to the album charts with "Hand.Cannot.Erase" - his second album to peak at #3 next to his 2013 offering "The Raven That Refused to Sing (And Other Stories)". Nena, another veteran on the German music scene, comes back with "Oldschool" at #4. Her last studio album "Du bist gut" peaked at #2. Ellie Goulding spends a third week as Germany's number one with "Love Me Like You Do", followed once again by "Cheerleader", the song of Omi, which Ellie replaced at the summit. "Firestone" of Kygo and the vocals of Conrad, which entered the top 100 together with Omi in the first week of 2015, joins the latter in the top three this week by advancing from #6 to #3.

Also having his first ever top 20 hit, both as a lead artist and as a guest, is The Weeknd as his "Earned It" moves up seven to #17.

David Guetta continues scoring hits in Germany and this time it is his collaboration with Emeli Sande called "What I Did For Love" which advances eleven positions to peak just outside the top 20 at #21. It is doubtful that it would reach the top three as the previous two singles of Guetta did but at least the top 20 is now within reach.
Video

Last Kelly Clarkson was in the German countdown with the 2012 flop "Catch My Breath" (peak #89). Now the singer is back on a better form as her "Heartbreak Song" rises to #23 from #41. The pilot single from Kelly's new album becomes her eleventh top 30 track in Germany.
Video

Belgian DJ project Lost Frequencies enters the top 30 this week at #37, an increase from #40, with "Are You With Me". The song, which fits perfectly with the current dance trends, is actually a remix of a track of US country singer Easton Corbin.

Kid Ink goes on with his surprising success in Germany as his track from the soundtrack of the latest Fast and Furious movie debuts inside the top 40. "Ride Out", at #34, is a collaboration with Tyga, YG, Wale and Rich Homie Quan.
Video

Up eight to #38 we can find Sia and her second single in Germany as a lead artist - "Elastic Heart".
Video

German producer Zedd is back with a new starry collaboration after the one with Ariana Grande. This time it's Selena Gomez who lends her vocals to the track called "I Want You To Know" at #43. Selena Gomez has been recently in the chart with the rather lackluster performance of "The Heart Wants What It Wants" peaking at #53 and staying in the chart for just three weeks.
Audio

"Sugar", the third official single from Maroon 5's "V" album, makes it this week inside the top 50 by rising eleven to #49. The previous two ones both reached the top 20.

And finally, up 15 to #50 is "Bitches N Marijuana", a track of Chris Brown and Tyga.

The Album Chart

In the LP chart, the soundtrack of Fifty Shades Of Grey moves up one to claim the throne with last week's winner Bushido plummeting to #12. The compilation is followed by the latest LP of legendary German rock band Scorpions called "Return To Forever". The album becomes the second consecutive studio one of the group to peak at #2 after their 2010 effort "Sting in the Tail". The third LP of rock/punk band Krawallbrueder titled "Venganza" makes a career best for the Saarland guys at #3. The re-release of Led Zeppelin's 1975 album "Physical Graffiti" sees the LP appearing at #4, while "Karacho", the new offering of local alternative band Donots, can be found at #5. The second album of rapper Mosh36 called "Unikat" is this week at #7. This week also marks the first time "Farbenspiel", the multi-platinum album of Helene Fischer, leaves the top ten since its release way back in the autumn of 2013.
