German Chart Comments - Issue Date 28.03

Nothing changes inside the top three with Mr. Probz' "Waves" extending its run as Germany's number one single to three weeks, Pharrell Williams' "Happy" is still at #2 and Clean Bandit's "Rather Be" sticks to #3.

Germany's Eurovision entry for 2014 debuted last week at #41 but now storms the top five as "Is It Right" of female trio Elaiza rises to #4. It is the first song of the girls to ever enter the countdown. Elaiza also manage to bring "Fight Against Myself", also part of their current EP, this week new at #50.

At #16, up from #24, Sido's "Liebe" becomes the thirteenth top 20 single of the German rapper.

Over the last couple of years Dutch DJ Bakermat has made a name in the Netherlands and Belgium with his hit "Vandaag" and this week the song, actually credited as "One Day (Vandaag)", charts finally in Germany at #23.

Further down the top 30, George Ezra's "Budapest" advances thirteen positions to #26, while "Wir sind alle wie eins", the second new song of Unheilig from their Best of album, soars from #71 to #29 in its second week in the chart.

James Blunt's "Heart To Heart" rises four this week and sits at #33 (perhaps the Echo 2014 version with Helene Fischer will boots its sales further), while "Trumpets" of Jason Derulo goes up two to #34.

The second highest new entry comes from local veteran hip hop group Die Fantastischen Vier, who are celebrating their 25th anniversary with a new single called aptly "25". The song arrives at #38 four years after "Danke" reached #36.

German singer MarieMarie was placed third during the selection of Germany's song for the Eurovision, which is enough for her debut single "Cotton Candy Hurricane" to skyrocket this week to #39 from #75.

"Little in the Middle" was the last single of Belgian singer Milow in the German charts, reaching #28 in 2011. Now he is back with a new album and the pilot single "We Must Be Crazy" debuts at #40, becoming for now Milow's least performing track in Germany.

Rapper Kollegah makes a new appearance at #45 with "Aks Im Wandschrank", while Sean Paul's "Hey Baby" enters the top 50 for the first time at #47, up from #68.

The Album Chart

The devotion of the fans of rap music to their stars is enough (at least for now) to prevent Unheilig to debut at #1 in the album chart with its Best Of 1999-2014. Thus Der Graf and his band enter at #2, with the new album "Killa" of Farid Bang coming at #1. This is the second consecutive number one of Farid Bang in the LP chart. "Zodiak" of Chakuza RAF Camora is new at #4, followed by Subway To Sally's "Mitgift" at #5 and George Michael's "Symphonica" at #6. George Michael's 2004 offering "Patience" reached #1. In a competitive week such as the current one Kylie Minogue has to be satisfied with her latest album "Kiss Me Once" entering at #10. In comparison, "Aphrodite" peaked at #3.

German Chart Comments - Issue Date 21.03

Although Dutch singer Mr. Probz had to retreat from the number one slot two weeks ago, his "Waves" (and especially the Robin Schulz remix) returns there this time and spends a second non-consecutive week as Germany's most beloved single. Thus, Pharrell Williams' "Happy" is down to #2 after being #1 for a total of eight weeks. Up one to #3, and entering the top three for the first time, is Clean Bandit's "Rather Be".

Also registering a rise of one place to new peaks we have Avicii's "Addicted To You" at #7 and Cris Cab's "Liar Liar" at #9.

The highest new entry this week can be found at #10 coming from Der Graf and his group Unheilig with their Eurovision offering "Als wär’s das erste Mal". Unfortunately, or not, the song placed second in the ranking for Germany's choice for the music contest in Denmark but the single at least has the honour to be the fifth top ten track of Unheilig. Last Der Graf was in the chart in 2012 with "Stark 2012", which reached #23.

At #11, up from #15, Sam Smith's "Money On My Mind" is heading towards the first ten, while at #15, up from #25, Coldplay's "Magic" becomes the sixth top 20 single of the British band in its second week in the countdown.

Australian singer Vance Joy and his amazing "Riptide" had already succeeded in being a relatively big hit in the UK and the time to conquer Germany has finally come as the single debuts at #23.

Following the release of a video, Sido's "Liebe" has returned on the upward path as the single moves up eight and is this week at #24.

A couple of new entries arrive at #31 and #32 coming from Kylie Minogue and Linkin Park, respectively. "Into The Blue", which heralds the release of Kylie's 12th studio album, comes two years after "Timebomb" flopped massively at #56. Linkin Park are also ready with a new album with "Guilty All The Same" being the first release from it.

James Blunt's "Heart To Heart" scores a new peak this week at #37, up from #41, while newcomer George Ezra and his great "Budapest" enters the top 50 at #39, an increase from #57.

Speaking of Eurovision earlier, I should now mention that the song which actually beat Unheilig to represent Germany arrives at #41. "Is It Right" marks the debut of girl trio Elaiza in the chart and we should expect it to be higher in the weeks to come.

And finally, a quick mentioning to Der Tourist Feat. Friedrich Liechtenstein, whose curious "Supergeil" moves up nine to #50, coming on the wave of the song use in a local supermarkt chain advertising.

The Album Chart

It may have come in the autumn of last year, but "Farbenspiel" of Helene Fischer spends yet another week as Germany's most bought album. It is followed by "G I R L" of Pharrell, which sticks to #2 where it entered seven days ago. New at #3 is the latest offering of Mike Oldfield. "Man on the Rocks" becomes the first appearance of the veteran artist inside the top three after three of his eighties albums reached #1. At #4 "Alles was du willst" turns into the most successful LP of local band Luxuslärm, while rapper Olexesh is new at #7 with "Nu eta da". The top ten is closed with the "Best Of" collection of every granny's favourite Argentinian - the one Semino Rossi.

German Chart Comments - Issue Date 14.03

Not much going on in the German top three this week as Pharrell Williams' "Happy" clocks up an eighth non-consecutive week as the country's number one. The US star is followed once again by former chart topper Mr. Probz and "Waves", while Helene Fischer returns to the top three as "Atemlos durch die Nacht" moves up one.

Ex-British number one, and one of the early spring hits this year, "Rather Be" of Clean Bandit (with the support of Jess Glynne) rises two to #4, while "Dark Horse" of Katy Perry scores a new peak at #6, up one from #7.

This week also sees "Liar Liar" of newcomer Cris Cab entering the top ten for the first time as the collaboration with Pharrell advances three positions to #10.

The highest new entry comes to the credit of Coldplay, who were last in the countdown with Hunger Games' "Atlas" (peak #19). "Magic", the pilot release from the band's new album, enters this week at #25 and it would be interesting to see whether the song could have any longevity or is destined to disappear in a week or two.

Coinciding with the peak of the Cologne carnivals, Brings' "Koelsche Jung" moves up to #26 from #41 to become their second best performing single, while fellow Cologne band Cat Ballou sees new interest in their 2013 single "Et Jitt Kein Wood" as the song soars to #29 from #62.

"Durchgehend online", the debut single of YouTube comedy duo DieLochis, reached #55 several months ago but now the two boys do it slightly better as follow-up "Ich Bin Blank" enters at #34.

At #40, up from #45, Jason Derulo scores his ninth top 40 single with "Trumpets", while also new at #50 is the Farid Bang-Kollegah rap collaboration "King & Killa".

The Album Chart

Helene Fischer seems unstoppable as her multi-selling "Farbenspiel" returns to the summit of the LP chart, showing that there are enough Germans who still do not own it. Thus, Pharrell Williams fails to score the double as his "G I R L" charts at #2, beating the #14 peak position of "In My Mind" from 2006, while Berlin indie folk band Mighty Oaks debut at #10 with "Howl".

German Chart Comments - Issue Date 7.03

Mr Probz may have managed to replace Pharrell Williams at the top of the German singles chart with "Waves" last week but this time quickly vacates the throne and lead the way to Pharrell's "Happy" to return to #1 for a seventh non-consecutive time. Thus the Dutch artist is down one to #2, followed by the highest new entry at #3.

Nico & Vinz, a Norwegian duo formerly known as Envy, already had a huge success in Scandinavia with "Am I Wrong" in 2013. Now it's time for the song to conquer the rest of Europe, with a debut at #3 in Germany quite a good start.

The ascent of Clean Bandit and "Rather Be" continues this week as the song moves six to #6, while at #8 Avicii's "Addicted To You", up also six, becomes the fourth top ten hit of the Swedish star in Germany.

Inside the top 20, Cris Cab, with the help of one Pharrell Williams, rises fifteen to #13, while Lorde has a second top 20 hit to her name as "Team" inches up one to #20.

Apart from the #5 peak of "Forever Love" in the 1990s, Gary Barlow was never a huge solo star in Germany ("Shame", which reached #11 in 2010, was after all a collaboration with the far more popular Robbie Williams), but that does not stop his comeback single, the brilliant "Let Me Go", to enter comfortably at #25.

At #26, Sido's "Liebe" moves up one, as well as "Wizard" of Martin Garrix and Hardway, which enters the top 30 at #30 in its second week on the chart.

"Feel It", actually credited to Three 6 Mafia vs. Tiesto with Sean Kingston & Flo Rida,  has been so far the biggest and only top 40 hit of Tiesto in Germany as it reached #21 in 2010. This week the most famous DJ worldwide returns to the countdown with a brand new material as "Red Lights" enters at #29.

Video

Following the flop of his last single ("Jambalaya", peak #100), German rapper Casper is back on better form as the fourth single from his current album, "Alles Endet (Aber Nie Die Musik)", enters fresh at #36.
Video

Boosted by the recent Cologne carnival, "Koelsche Jung" of local "cult" band Brings soars to #41 from #98, while "Trumpets" of Jason Derulo moves up four to #45. Also new inside the top 50 is the latest offering of schlager singer Juergen Drews and "Und wir waren wie Vampire" at #48.

In the album chart, veteran star Wolfgang Petry has his third #1 studio LP with "Einmal Noch!", while even bigger legend Udo Juergens brings "Mitten Im Leben", his 42nd studio album, new at #3. German indie band The Notwist have their best charting album with "Close to the Glass" at #6, while Soehne Mannheims have had better days as their latest "Elyzion" enters at the relatively low #9. The latest album of Gary Barlow, called "Since I Saw You Last", appears at #10.
