German Chart Comments - Issue Date 27.09

The ten-week reign of Avicii on the top has finally come to an end with the arrival of the latest single of Jason Derulo. "Talk Dirty", which so heavily features the extremely popular in Bulgaria pop-folk rhythms (the genre's called chalga) that I can't stand it, flies directly at #1. This is Derulo's first number one in Germany, while the superior "Breathing", which actually samples authentic Bulgarian folklore, reached #5. The singer's previous single, and the first taken from his latest album, "The Other Side" peaked at #35.

Thus "Wake Me Up" of Avicii slips one to two, followed by Katy Perry's "Roar", which failed to take the crown and is this week down to #3.

"Animals" of Martin Garrix is this week up three to #5, while Woodkid's amazing "Run Boy Run" shoots itself from #26 to #11 in its second week on the top 100, proving the power of Vodafone commercials for yet another time.

The third single of Imagine Dragons in Germany also becomes their third top 20 hit as "On Top Of The World" advances to #13 from #22, beating the #20 peak of "It's Time". "Radioactive" reached #4 several months ago.

Last week Miley Cyrus' "We Can't Stop" reached #16 to become her most successful song in Germany, a feat which is this week matched by her next single as "Wrecking Ball" moves up from #25 to #16.

Also new to the top 20 is "Hero" of Family Of The Year, up from #24 to #19 and already a candidate for the most surprising hit of the year, as well as Alligatoah's "Willst du", which makes its indecent proposal for drugs abuse at #20, up from #23.

The highest new entry comes from the man of the moment as Avicii's "Hey Brother" enters as an album cut at #24. Three positions behind the Swedish DJ, we find the return of Linkin Park with "A Light That Never Comes" - a collaboration with Steve Aoki, which marks the forthcoming release of Linkin Park's second album with remixes called "Recharged". "Castle of Glass", the previous single of the rock band in Germany, peaked at #10.

Also new in the top 100 and in the vein of Klangkarussel's "Sonnentanz" comes Klingande and the similarly great "Jubel" at #30.

German band The Bosshoss followed their #8 hit "Don’t Gimme That" in 2011 with two minor singles in the lower end of the chart but now the boys are back with fresh material and "Do It" makes a more respectable new entry at #31. It is the third top 40 single of The Bosshoss.
Video

A position behind The Bosshoss, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis move up six with "Same Love", while the comeback single of Britney Spears arrives at #41. "Work Bitch" is the pilot single of Britney's eight studio album and if it does not advance any further for now becomes her least performing charting single in Germany (Smurfs' extravaganza "Ooh La La" not included).

Though they still have a long way to walk before removing the one-hit wonder stigma ("Pompeii peaked at #6), UK band Bastille are on the right path as follow-up single "Things We Lost In The Fire" shoots 21 positions up and is at #50.

The Album Chart

Since 2003 Die Ärzte have topped the album chart with every new release and now even the massive sales of Andrea Berg could not prevent that as their live offering - "Die Nacht der Dämonen" enters directly at #1, becoming the fifth consecutive album of the band to do so, and the eight in their career. Thus "Atlantis" of Andrea Berg slips to two, while Schiller's "Opus" is down to seven, amid a completely new top ten. At #3 we have Placebo's "Loud Like Love", at #4 BAP's founder Niedecken with "Zosamme Alt", Avicii's "True" is at #5, while rapper SSIO's "BB.U.M.SS.N" enters at #6. Further down the latest offering of rapper Fler "Maskulin Mixtape Vol. 3" is new at #8, Jack Johnson's "From Here To Now To You" is at #9, British deathmetal band Carcass' "Surgical Steel" is at #10 and Elton John's "The Diving Board" comes in at #11.

German Chart Comments - Issue Date 20.09

Avicii's "Wake Me Up" is still unmovable from Germany's number one slot as it stays there for the tenth consecutive time. Though many have expected "Roar" of Katy Perry to be this week's winner, the song sticks to the runner-up position. Up two to #3 is "Dear Darlin" of Olly Murs. Though it's a great song, its performance is somewhat surprising as it is the third single taken from Olly's current album, while previous one "Army of Two" flopped massively at the low end of the chart.

John Newman's "Love Me Again" rises also two and is this week at #6, while new in the top ten is "Animals" by Martin Garrix, which advances eleven positions and sits comfortably at #8.

Following the #4 peak of "Im Ascheregen" from August this year, local rapper Casper releases the second single from his soon to be launched new album. Thus, "Hinterland" comes this week at #11, becoming the highest new entry in the top 100 and also the third song of Casper to enter the top 20.

Earlier this year UK singer Birdy had a huge hit in Germany with "People Help the People", which despite not being much successful in her native country reached #3. Now, she is ready with new material and the magnificent "Wings" enters fresh at #15. There're still no signs that the song would make any chart news in the UK though.

Video

She is currently all over the gossip columns with her erratic behaviour but that doesn't stop Miley Cyrus to finally bring her global hit "We Can't Stop" in the top 20. So after some wait, the song has caught the attention of the record-buying public and shoots this week to #16 from #39. It beats the #17 peak of Miley's best performing single in Germany so far - "7 Things" from 2008. At #25 we can also find Miley Cyrus' next single - the notorious "Wrecking Ball", which after heading in the wrong direction last week, climbs this time around to #25 from #72. It is her fifth top 30 single in Germany.

The influx of YouTube stars bringing songs to the chart continues for yet another week as local Internet presenters Gronkh & Sarazar, also known as Die Superhomies, bring "Elektrotitte (5000 Volt)" directly at #17.

Video

Two positions behind, Coldplay arrive with "Atlas", the main song from the forthcoming Hunger Games movie sequel. The song comes after "Princess of China" reached #41 and is the fifth top 20 single of the British band.

Lyric Video

At positions #22 to #24 we have three songs definitely on the rise - "On Top Of The World" of Imagine Dragons, up one to #22, Alligatoah's "Willst Du", up seven to #23, and Family Of The Year's "Hero", also up seven to #24.

By entering at #26 "Run Boy Run" becomes the first proper hit of French musician Woodkid, who has been more famous as a music videos director so far. "I Love You" has also entered the German chart but has reached only #61.

Video

And finally, Ivy Quainoo, the winner of the first edition of Germany's The Voice, is ready with her second album and "Wildfires (Light It Up)", the pilot single, this week enters at #44, a far cry from the #2 peak of debut single "Do You Like What You See".

The Album Chart

Nothing can stop schlager queen Andrea Berg to have her seventh number one album this week as "Atlantis" storms the album chart with massive sales and cementing the genre dominance in this countdown. Thus Schiller's "Opus" has to slip a position to #2, while Arctic Monkeys' praised "AM" debuts at #3, falling short of the #2 peak of "Favourite Worst Nightmare". At #4 2raumwohnung have their sixth consecutive top album in the shape of "Achtung Fertig", while the latest live DVD of Madonna with her "MDNA" tour appears at #5. Also new in the top ten is Rise Against's "Long Forgotten Songs - B-Sides & Covers" at #7, Kontra K's "12 Runden" at #8 and Goldfrapp's "Tales of Us" at #9.

German Chart Comments - Issue Date 13.09

As Avicii's "Wake Me Up" spends a ninth week on top, it's "Roar" of Katy Perry the hit which will most probably replace it at the top as the song climbs one to #2. Thus, Naughty Boy has to slip a position to #3 with "La La La".

Also on the rise, and already her biggest single in the country is "Burn" by Ellie Goulding, which moves two to #4. Olly Murs follows close as his "Dear Darlin'" is up five, sitting comfortably at #5. Two places below the UK star, Stromae's "Papaoutai" continues to surprise as it goes up two to #7.

The highest new entry marks the return of German band Revolverheld after a three-year pause and solo projects. "Das kann uns keiner nehmen" enters at #10 on a wave of strong radio support and becomes the third top ten single of the Hamburg-founded group next to football anthem "Helden 2008" (peak #2) and their previous chart entry "Halt dich an mir fest" (peak #8).

Video

On the rise in its second week in the chart is also Eminem's "Berzerk", up three to #12, and now with a released video the song maybe will turn into Eminem's next top ten single.*

Video

Following the release of a new vocal version, the sales of "Sonnentanz", Klangkarussell's already top five single in Germany, were boosted to bring the song back in the top 20, up to #16 from #54 in its 56th week on the countdown.

Video

The top 20 is this week entered also by European hit "Animals" of Martin Garrix, which has already stormed the charts in France, the Netherlands and Switzerland and now soars to #17 from #31.

At #23 Imagine Dragons' third single "On Top Of The World" advances six positions and is soon to be seen in the top 20. Also climbing is "Willst Du", which can be found at #30, up five, representing the first single of Alligatoah inside the top 30. At #31 US band Family Of The Year moves up five in its second week in the chart with "Hero" as the radio-friendly song is gaining in airplay.

He may be number one for ages but that doesn't stop now superstar Avicii to release new material, which results "You Make Up" in entering the Germany's Top 100 at #34. It is the sixth single of the Swedish DJ to enter the top 50.

Video

Also new, and coinciding with the current hype for comedy acts on YouTube is "Ich Trau Mich Nicht" of ApeCrime, which comes in at #35. It is the first single of the trio in the countdown.

Video

Further down the chart, Robin Thicke's follow-up to "Blurred Lines" is advancing as "Give It 2 U" rises five to #36, while in the second week on the list Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' gay marriage support anthem "Same Love" enters the top 50 at #38, up from #55. It is the third single of the two US stars in the top 40. More curiously though "And We Danced", which has been a top 20 presence in the online shops for months now, is still not allowed to chart in the official countdown. Go figure...

Local rapper Marteria has followed his chart topper "Lila Wolken" with charity single "Blue Uganda", which stalled outside the top 50, while now he is back with proper new material as "Big Bang" enters the chart at #40.

Video

A single thought also on Pink's "True Love", which though not a true hit, at least makes a new peak at #43, up from #50.

Video

And finally, Hurts are back in the chart with the third single of their second album as "Somebody To Die For" appears at #46, improvement compared with the #52 peak of "Blind". B-side of the current single is actually "Ohne dich", a cover of a song of local band "Selig", which this week comes fresh at #88.

The Album Chart

Ten new entries come directly among the first eleven places in Germany's album chart this week with only Santiano's "Mit Den Gezeiten" remaining there from the previous chart. The parade is led by the latest album of Schiller, called "Opus", which easily becomes the fourth album of the electro musician to reach #1. Thees Uhlmann's appropriately named "#2" is at #2, followed by (take a deep breath) rapper Weekend's "Am Wochenende Rapper" at #3, rock band Frei.Wild's "Gegen Alles, Gegen Nichts" at #4, Nine Inch Nails' "Hesitation Marks" at #5, Tarja's "Colours In The Dark" at #6, folk rock group Schandmaul's "So Weit, So Gut" at #7, Kreator's "Dying Alive" at #9, Babyshambles' "Sequel To The Prequel" at #10 and Patrice's "The Rising Of The Son" at #11.

German Chart Comments - Issue Date 6.09

Avicii's "Wake Me Up" clocks up an eight week on top of the German singles countdown, with Naughty Boy's "La La La" at #2 for a fourth time in a row. The all static top three this week is rounded by "Roar" of Katy Perry.

The combination Flo Rida and Pitbull was always destined to be big in Germany and therefore it's not strange that the two global stars have entered new at #4 with "Can't Believe It". The single, taken from the forthcoming "Perfect 10" album, is thus the eight track of Flo Rida as a lead artist to come into the German top 10 and arrives after the #24 peak of "Let It Roll".

Video

Who would have thought that cult band Placebo would have their biggest hit chartwise in 2013 but the trio proves that it still has enough power left to finally crack the top 20 with "Too Many Friends". The song can be found at #14, beating by far the #32 peak of their best performing single so far "For What It’s Worth". Actually, the latter was taken from Placebo's previous album released in 2009, which just means that the band has slowly and unnoticed been gaining in attention over the years. In Germany, at least.
Video

This week's chart also marks the return of Eminem, whose "Berzerk" comes in new at #15. The single, which heralds the release of part 2 of his "The Marshall Mathers LP", appears in the top 100 after "Lighters", which I actually don't remember at all, reached #26 in 2011. It's the seventeenth top 20 single of the superstar in the country.

Towards the end of 2012 Swedish pop duo Icona Pop emerged as if from nowhere and brought "I Love It" to #3 in the German charts. Eventually, the song became a global phenomenal, being high on the charts in USA and UK, and now the girls are back with the follow-up. And as a positive surprise "Girlfriend" makes a rather respectable debut at #17.
Video

Further down the top 50 we have on the rise with new peak positions Imagine Dragons' "On Top Of The World", up to #29 from #30, Martin Garrix' "Animals", up to #31 from #41 and Alligatoah's "Willst Du" at #35, up from #43.

The last new entry in the top 50 comes from US indie pop band Family Of The Year and their "Hero" at #36, which is the first ever song of the newcomers to enter the German singles chart.

The Album Chart

German rappers continue to top the album chart in their first week of sales, with the latest countdown being no exception. Thus Eko Fresh has his first ever number one LP with "Eksodus". Before falling quickly down the list over the next weeks, the album beats easily the #2 peak of Eko Fresh's last year release "Ek to the Roots". Also new at #2 is the new edition of Bob Dylan's Bootleg Series - "Another Self Portrait (1969-1971) - The Bootleg Series Vol. 10". Comedy online sensation Y-Titty bring their debut album "Stricksocken Swagger" straight at #3. Also new this week are the latest offerings of Franz Ferdinand "Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action" at #4 and of Avenged Sevenfold "Hail To The King" at #5. Packed with new songs, "Halcyon", the latest album of Ellie Goulding, makes a reappearance at #8.
