German Chart Comments - Issue Date 25.01

Will.I.Am and Britney Spears spend a second week on top of the German singles chart with "Scream and Shout", while The Script are once again the runner-ups with "Hall of Fame". At #3, up from #6, Olly Murs clears all doubts that he may be considered a one-hit wonder as "Troublemaker" enters the top three. As we all know his first proper single in the country "My Heart Skips a Beat" topped the chart last year.

It took almost two months for Swedish act Icona Pop to finally leave the top 20 zone and "I Love It" moves in the right direction as this week it is at #6, a rise from #16.
Video

At #8 German rapper Sido has his fourth top ten single with "Bilder im Kopf", an increase from #14. The others three are "Hey du!", "Augen auf / Halt dein Maul" and "Der Himmel soll warten".

A position behind Sido Swedish House Mafia register their biggest single ever as their farewell track "Don't You Worry Child" advances three positions and enters the top 10 for the first time.

Further down the countdown, Linkin Park's "Castle Of Glass" has slowly penetrated the first 20 positions as this week it is up seven to #18. It's the band 12th top 20 single in Germany.

Otto Knows' dance anthem "Million Voices" also makes it in the top 20, at #20, up from #31, as current US number one "Thrift Shop" by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis is already at #23 in Germany, up from #27.

The highest new entry can be found at #26 and despite with material already two years old, Ellie Goulding has been finally discovered by the mass audience as her "Lights" debuts at #26. Curiously, the newer "Anything Could Happen" has peaked at #66 in the country.
Video

Two places behind Ellie, US band Imagine Dragons is up 15 positions with their "It's Time".

Between numbers 30 and 40, Xavas' "Wage Es Zu Glauben" at #34 (up from #37); Labrinth's "
Beneath Your Beautiful" at #36 (up from #40) and Bon Jovi's "Because We Can" at #37 (up from #39) all make new peaks this week. As the aforementioned Ellie Goulding, it's better late than never as Jay-Z & Kanye West's modern hip-hop classic "Ni**as in Paris" finally enters the top 50 at #40, an increase from #56.

German artists also occupy the positions two to four as rapper Nero ("Vega"), cabaret king Max Raabe ("Für Frauen ist das kein Problem") and pop singer Johannes Oerding ("Für immer ab jetzt") flooded the market with new material. New in German cinemas this week:

Flight
Trailer
(BG Status - To be released on February 22)

Frankenweenie

Trailer
(BG Status - The Bulgarian Disney distributor considered the movie as too niche for our market, so despite Oscar nominated it won't be released in Bulgaria. It's the same distributor which dropped Paranorman, so no surprises here. Just the broken hearts of all fans of animation and Tim Burton)

Movie 43
Trailer
(BG Status - Released simultaneously)

Lincoln
Trailer
(BG Status - The Bulgarian Fox distributor was against this movie from the very start, considering it as too talky and insufficient on the action side. The fact that War Horse and Tintin were flops in the country doesn't help either. However, due to all the Oscar talk, Lincoln's distribution has not been cancelled yet and for now is postponed for March 22. But, if it does not take the prize for best film, don't expect it to be released in Bulgaria. And yes, this will officially mark the end of any normality at one of the two main distributors in the country.)

Gangster Squad

German Chart Comments - Issue Date 18.01

So, after more than three months of Psy and Rihanna's reign, we finally have some fresh wind on top of the German singles chart, with Will.I.Am's "Scream & Shout" up two to #1. Apart from Black Eyed Peas, this is Will.I.Am's first ever number one. His biggest single so far as a leading artist (out of only three) has been "I Got It from My Mama" with a peak at #33. As far as his collaborator Britney Spears is concerned, she has two number ones on her account -- "Baby One More Time" and "Lucky".
Video

At #2 we actually can find Will.I.Am once again with his guest appearance in The Script's "Hall Of Fame", which rises two notches to enter the top three.
Video

At #3 Psy retreats, most certainly for the last time, from the number one slot.
Video

After debuting last week at #17 Olly Murs succeeds to have his second top ten on his account as "Troublemaker" is now at #6. Olly deserves to be more than a one-hit wonder, so well done to him.
Video

Who'd have thought that after they are (almost) forgotten elsewhere, the boys from Blue would have a top ten single in Germany in 2013? Yes, it's true that their "I Can" entry for the Eurovision contest reached #7 in 2011 but the group's current resurrection is thanks to local number one comedy "Schlussmacher", which uses "Hurt Lovers" in its soundtrack. By entering at #7 this is Blue's sixth top ten single and third to peak at #7. Their biggest hit is "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word", which reached #3.
Video

Some new peaks further down the top 30. At #12 Swedish House Mafia is up two with "Don't you worry child", Sido is back in the top 20 with "Bilder im Kopf" at #14, up from #21, while Linkin Park are back in the top 25 with "Castle of Glass" at #25, up from #36.
Video - SHM
Video - Sido
Video - Linkin Park

Further down the countdown, "Thrift shop" of  Macklemore & Ryan Lewis soars 15 positions to #27 and "Million voices" of Otto Knows rises 10 positions to #31. It is also a new peak for Xavas' "Wage es zu glauben" at #37, up from #66.
Video - Otto Knows
Video - Macklemore

Video - Xavas

"What Do You Got?" was the last single of veteran rock band Bon Jovi in the chart, which reached #23 in 2010, but the boys are back with a brand new material. "Because We Can" debuts this week at #39 and has zero chances to challenge the #2 peak of their biggest hit "It's My Life".
Lyric Video

At #40, up from #46, Labrinth's "Beneath your beautiful" continues its upward movement, while "It's Time", the first single of US band Imagine Dragons, rises 12 slots to #43.
Video - Labrinth
Video - Imagine Dragons

"The Jean Genie" is the first single of legend David Bowie registered in the German charts way back in 1972 (peak #37), while he was last in the countdown in 2002 with "Everyone Says 'Hi" (peak #83). Curiously or not, his career in Germany's singles chart is not so rich, though Bowie's biggest song to date is "Let’s Dance" with peak #2. So, now, at the beginning of 2013, he's back with "Where Are We Now" entering at #47. Having in mind the Berlin connection, it should have been higher.

German Chart Comments - Issue Date 11.01

Benefiting from the New Year's parties and the year-end chart craziness, Psy's enormous "Gangnam Style" manages to remove Rihanna from the top slot in Germany and thus steals a third non-consecutive week at #1. Rihanna's "Diamonds" gives up the throne after 11 weeks there, while "Scream & Shout", the latest from Will.I.Am, with the support of Britney Spears, rises five positions to #3. Apart from his participation at Black Eyed Peas, this is Will.I.Am's biggest ever single in Germany. As far as Britney is concerned, she was last in the top three with "My Prerogative" in 2004.

At #7, up from #10, Seeed's "Augenbling" is just two positions short of joining "Aufstehn!" and "Ding" to be among the biggest singles of the German band.

Video

Further down the top 10, Cro's "Einmal um die Welt" advances two notches to peak at #9. It's the third top ten single of the new German star.

Video

Swedish House Mafia's "Don't you worry child" is up five this week to #14, while Icona Pop's "I love it" moves up four to #16.

This leads us to the highest new entry at #17. "Troublemaker" is the lead single of Olly Murs' third album and only the third song of Olly allowed to chart in Germany. It manages to beat the #24 peak of "Oh My Goodness" but whether it would turn into a worthy successor of #1 smash "My Heart Skips A Beat" only time will tell.

Video

At #21 Sido's "Bilder im Kopf" rises three positions, with the rapper last being solo in the top 20 with the unplugged version of "Der Himmel soll warten" (peak #2).

Video

The second and last new entry inside the top 50 is the first single of local pop and jazz singer Schmidt. "Heart Shaped Gun", which was used in local TV series, debuts at #37.

Between numbers 41 and 50, Otto Knows' dance anthem "Million Voices" finally makes it in the top 50, at #41, up from #53. "Thrift Shop" of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Wanz is also on the rise, this week to #42 from #46. At #46 UK singer Labrinth registers his first ever top 50 in Germany as his duet with Emeli Sande, "Beneath Your Beautiful", moves up five positions.

German Chart Comments - Issue Date 4.01

It's once again that time of the year when all is still and quiet in the German charts, with all eyes towards the year-end countdowns. There, Michel Telo and Die Toten Hosen sit comfortably atop the singles and the albums lists, whose full glory you can check here and here.

Back to the weekly chart, Rihanna clocks up her tenth week on top with "Diamonds", followed by Psy at #2 and Pink at #3. Further down the top ten, will.i.am and Britney advance two positions to #8 in the second week of "Scream And Shout" in the countdown.

At #19 "Don't you worry child", the farewell single of Swedish House Mafia, finally makes it in the top 20, up from #29. At the same time, "Castle Of Glass", the latest from Linkin Park, moves up ten to #35.

Further down, Jeff Buckley's classic "Hallelujah" reappears at #38, enjoying the Internet era which allows the song to make a Top 100 impact just now.
Video

The highest and only new entry in the top 50 is the second single of local rappers Kollegah & Farid Bang. "Drive-By" can be found at #41, while several weeks ago "Dynamit" peaked at #28.
Video

Simultaneously with its climb in the US chart, "Thrift Shop" of Macklemore, Ryan Lewis and Wanz goes in the top 50 of Germany as well and is this week at #46, up from #55.

The Album Chart

In the album chart, only LPs of casting stars dare to enter the market post-Christmas, with Mrs. Greenbird, the winners of X Factor, storming the #1. The duo benefiting from its sound of new folk, which is so hot right now. At #11, the winner of Das Supertalent Jean-Michel Aweh comes in with "Raus Aus Dem Nebel", while Nick Howard, the winner of The Voice, brings the compilation "My Voice Story" at #34.

German Chart Comments - Issue Date 28.12

Rihanna's reign over Germany's single chart goes on as "Diamonds" spends a ninth week on top, followed by Psy's "Gangnam Style" at #2 (up from #3).
Video - RiRi
Video - Psy

This leaves us to UK newcomer Birdy to stir the top three as her second single "People Help People", used in several commercials, shoots itself from #36 to #3 to become her first ever hit on these shores. In comparison, debut song "Skinny Love", which entered the top 100 after "People Help People" and was far bigger hit in Birdy's home country, has stalled at #79. Of course, Birdy's triumph in the top 100 as well as the good performance of some of the new entries and other acts in the list is attributed to the final of the second edition of The Voice of Germany.

Video

Expectedly, after he was pronounced winner of the show, Nick Howard rises 34 positions with "Unbreakable" and this week can be located at #5. A year ago, "Do You Like What You See", the first single of then winner Ivy Quinoo, debuted at #2.

Video

Although "This Is Love" was a massive success elsewhere in Europe, the single of will.i.am stumbled at #54 in Germany. Thus, the Black Eyed Peas star needed the help of one Britney Spears to score his first ever top 10 single as a lead artist in Germany. "Scream And Shout" enters this week at #10 and is also Britney's 18th top 10 single in the country. She has been absent from the chart since "I Wanna Go" reached #32 in 2011.

Video

At #20 Isabell Schmidt, the runner-up at The Voice Of Germany, moves up thirteen places with her self-written "Heimweh".

Live

After a brief appearance at the low end of the top 100 several weeks ago, following an official release Sido re-enters the chart with his newest single "Bilder im Kopf" at #22. The rapper was last in the chart solo with "Geboren um frei zu sein", peak #41, in 2011, while together with B-Tight he had "Hol doch die Polizei" reaching #58 earlier in 2012.
Video

As Nelly Furtado supported one of the finalists of The Voice Of Germany, it is not strange to see her latest single arriving at #26. A standard fare for Nelly, "Waiting For The Night" comes after "Spirit Indestructible" (peak #23) and "Big Hoops (Bigger the Better)" (peak #43). The latest album of the singer is still to produce a top ten single.

Audio

Coming also after an appearance at The Voice, Leona Lewis finally debuts with her newest single "Trouble" in Germany. The song enters the top 100 at #27, with the last single of Leona in the chart being "I Got You", peak at #43, in 2010. As those familiar with the chart know, Leona's "Trouble" from 2011 was such a flop that the record company banned it from even appearing in the countdown.

Video

The impact of another casting show can be sensed at #28 where Jean-Michel Aweh brings his first ever single "Raus aus dem Nebel". Aweh is the latest winner of Das Supertalent show. A year earlier Leo Rojas stood two weeks in the chart with his version of "Einsamer Hirte" (peak #48).

Audio

Though he also took part in The Voice Of Germany and though "Different" is a better song (if you ask me) than "Candy", the second single of
Robbie Williams' latest album enters this week at #31. "Candy" peaked at #3 earlier in 2012.
Video

And finally, Michael Lane who took the bronze at The Voice, advances with his "Mrs. Lawless" 14 positions to #33.

96. Labrinth - Express Yourself

The Album Chart

Proving that she is one of the most loved German singers currently, though in the schlager music zone, the latest live album/DVD of Helene Fischer debuts directly at #1. The studio version of the album also reached #1 in 2011. At the same time the latest collection of Rammstein's videos (didn't they have one in 2011?) is new at #5.
