German Chart Comments - Issue Date 27.12

After a brief stay at #1 for just a week, "Changes" of Faul & Wad Ad & Pnau (I challenge you to remember the artists in two years) drops this time to #2, leaving the way for Pitbull to have his first number single in the country as a lead artist. The superstar  provided in the past vocals to Jennifer Lopez' number one smash "On The Floor" but "Timber" becomes his first proper chart topper in Germany. Kudos also to Kesha, whose participation on the song means that the singer has her second number one in the country after 2009's "Tik Tok".

The top three is rounded up by "Lieder" of Adel Tawil, while the highest new entry comes on behalf of this year's winner of The Voice of Germany. Andreas Kuemmert is the man who unsurprisingly ranked first in the casting show, with "Simple Man" being his winner song. And the single arrives this week fresh at #4. The show had produced two winners before Andreas - Ivy Quainoo, whose career started promisingly before no one noticed that she had a new album out several months ago, and Nick Howard, who I think no one remembers any more.

Inside the top 50 The Voice of Germany is also responsible for #12 where runner-up Chris Schummert has his "The Singer" entering the chart, while Judith Van Hel, which ranked third, is new at #20 with "Fucking Beautiful". The two come from team Samu of Sunrise Avenue fame.

Coinciding with the success of The Hobbit 2 in cinemas, Ed Sheeran's "I See Fire", which is featured in the movie's soundtrack, soars this week to #9 from #53. The song thus reaches the same peak as Sheeran's only hit in Germany - "The A Team". However, the latter enjoyed a relative longevity in the chart, which "I See Fire" would probably not see.

By the looks of it, though reaching a new peak at #22, "Unconditional" is going to be one of the minor hits of Katy Perry. This week sees also the return of "Dark Horse" in the chart at #32. The song, which appeared briefly before the release of Perry's latest album, will be now officially promoted as a third single taken out of it.

After "Can’t Believe It" reached #4 earlier this year, Flo Rida starts slowly with his follow-up offering called "How I Feel". The song enters this week at #24 to be Rida's 12th top 30 single as a lead artist.
Video

Pharrell Williams is definitely among the stars of the year as he provided vocals to two of 2013 biggest tracks "Get Lucky" of Daft Punk and "Blurred Lines" of Robin Thicke. Now, it is time for the man to rekindle his own solo career, which results in "Happy" entering at #30. Easily the song becomes his biggest solo outing in the country, beating the #37 of 2005's "Can I Have It Like That".
Video

As his protege in The Voice of Germany won the show, Max Herre is also enjoying a minor chart success with the MTV Unplugged version of "A-N-N-A (Immer Wenn Es Regnet)" rising to #43 from #51.

And last, we have a new single of Frei.Wild entering as it is the tradition lately in the lower part of the top 50. "Stille Nacht" is thus at #45.

The Album Chart

In another slow week in the album chart Robbie Williams' "Swings Both Ways" is still at #1, cementing its status as one of the biggest releases this year. "Farbenspiel" of Helene Fischer is still at #2, while Max Herre brings his first MTV Unplugged at #3. The ex-Freundeskreis singer has scored two number one solo albums so far.

German Chart Comments - Issue Date 20.12

Following the somewhat unexpected success of Klingande and "Jubel", another French project, this time called Faul & Wad Ad (vs. Pnau) makes it to the top of the German charts with the similarly sounding "Changes". The song rises four to replace the aforementioned "Jubel" after spending seven non-consecutive weeks as #1.

At #2, up from #3, Pitbull and Kesha advance one to a new peak with "Timber", while Avicii's "Hey Brother" returns to the top three, an increase from #4.

The highest new entry belongs to local rapper Marteria, who a year ago had a number one smash with "Lila Wolken". "Kids (2 Finger an den Kopf)" debuts at #7 and becomes the second single of Marteria to enter the German top ten. He was last in the top 100 with "Big Bang", which reached #40 several months ago.

At #16, up from #24, Tim Bendzko has his fourth top 20 single with "Unter die Haut", which is taken from a new version of his second album. The song is a collaboration with Cassandra Steen, who has been absent from the countdown since "Tanz" reached #28 in 2011.

Imagine Dragons, one of the main discoveries of 2013, are on their way to have a fourth hit single in Germany as "Demons" shoots itself to #32 from #58. The group's previous records - "It's Time", "Radioactive" and "On Top of the World" reached #20, #4 and #13, respectively.

Afrojack is also on the way to have a proper hit with "The Spark", which this week moves up one to #36.

And the other new entries this week:

51. Max Herre - A-N-N-A (Immer wenn es regnet) (Unplugged)

The Album Chart

Following the Christmas rush and due the fact that every important new release is already in the stores, nothing interesting happens in the album chart where Robbie Williams returns to the summit with "Swings Both Ways".

German Chart Comments - Issue Date 13.12

It's a seventh week for Klingande and "Jubel" on the summit of the German singles chart. Next at two, up from #3, Adel Tawil's "Lieder" returns once again to its peak position, while Pitbull and Kesha are yelling "Timber" at #3, up from #4. The latter is the second top three single of Pitbull as a lead singer in Germany, next to "Give Me Everything".

In its third week on the countdown, Faul & Wad Ad Vs Pnau rise five to #5 with "Changes", while at #13 Helene Fischer has her best performing single ever with "Atemlos durch die Nacht". By rising from #31, the second single from Helene's multi-selling album "Farbenspiel" improves considerably on the #20 peak of previous one "Fehlerfrei".

In the steps of Martin Garrix' "Animals", Canadian electronic music duo Dvbbs and US DJ Borgeous are rising high in the German chart as "Tsunami" moves from #26 to #18.

The highest new entry belongs to Sean Paul and "Turn It Up", as the second single from Paul's "Full Frequency" album enters at #21. It is, however, far from the #3 peak of pilot single "The Other Side Of Love".

At #23, up from #27, Katy Perry is advancing rather slowly towards the top 20 with "Unconditionally". Up one in its second week to #24 is also "Unter die Haut" of Tim Bendzko and Cassandra Steen.

Further down the list, with the approaching of Christmas, the usual bunch of holiday hits is finding its way towards the upper reaches of the countdown. Once again Wham!'s "Last Christmas" leads, as the song soars this week to #32 from #70. Melanie Thornton's "Wonderful Dream (Holidays Are Coming)" is up to #38 from #80, while Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You" is at #50, an increase from #88.

Coinciding with the debut of his latest album at #1, some Sido album tracks have also invaded the singles chart. First of them is "Arbeit", a collaboration with Helge Schneider, which is at #33.

And finally at #37, Afrojack's "The Spark" advances seven places to a new peak position.

The Album Chart

Bad news this week for Britney Spears, whose latest album "Britney Jean" flops disastrously at #20 in the German LP chart and easily becomes the first album of the (former) superstar to miss the top 10. At #1 Sido has his second number one album with "30-11-80", while the latest from Nightwish appears at #6. It's called "Showtime, Storytime". Also new inside the top ten is Scorpions' "MTV Unplugged" at #9.

German Chart Comments - Issue Date 29.11

(There'll be no videos for the time being)

Klingande's "Jubel" continues to amaze as it spends a fifth week on top of Germany's singles chart. It is followed by "Lieder" of Adel Tawil, which manages to return to #2 (from #4) four weeks after the song debuted there. At #3 Avicii's "Hey Brother" slips one to round up the top three.

The highest new entry, at #4, sees the return of one of the biggest German stars at the moment as Sido makes "Einer dieser Steine" his fourth top five single. The song follows "Bilder im Kopf", which peaked at #5 last year, turning into perhaps his most famous song ever. "Einer dieser Steine", which by the looks of it will mark the release of a new album, is a collaboration with Mark Forster, a local singer who has had two singles inside the top 100 so far, with "Auf dem Weg" (peak #49) being the more successful one.

Despite the slow start three weeks ago and coinciding with the release of his latest album (of course at #1), "Go Gentle" of Robbie Williams makes it this time around into the top 20, up from #25 to #16. The song thus boosts Robbie's string of top 20 hits in Germany to nineteen.

Following the success of Klingande, it is not odd to see more trying to copy the winning formula. That's the case at #21 where we have this week Faul & Wad Ad vs. Pnau debuting with "Changes".

At #22, up from #69, "Atemlos Durch Die Nacht", Helene Fischer's second single from her multi-selling new album, is slowly turning the schlager star into a star in the singles chart as well.

A combination Calvin Harris & Hurts should have set the German charts on fire (because of Hurts, not of the British DJ), but for now "Under Control" has to be content with #25. Last Calvin Harris was in the top 100 with "Thinking About You" (peak #56), while Hurts were here with "Somebody to Die For" (peak #46).

After "Roar" was deprived of the number one slot by that awful DeRulo's song, Katy Perry has released the follow-up in the shape of "Unconditionally". The song enters this week the top 50 at #34, up from #54, to continue Katy's unharmed string of top 40 hits.

At #45 Kid Ink and Chris Brown move up two to a new peak, while Sportfreunde Stiller's great "New York, Rio, Rosenheim" finally makes it into the top 50 by climbing 11 places to #49. The follow-up to #4 hit "Applaus, Applaus" has been shamefully met with a little interest so far.

And the other new entries this week:

52. Stromae - Formidable
53. John Newman - Cheating
58. DVBBS & Borgeous - Tsunami
64. Justin Bieber ft. R. Kelly - PYD
80. Afrojack ft. Spree Wilson - The Spark
82. P!nk - Are We All We Are
85. Robbie Williams ft. Olly Murs - I Wan'na Be Like You
88. Robbie Williams ft. Lily Allen - Dream A Little Dream
92. Thirty Seconds To Mars - City Of Angels

 The Album Chart

This week sees Robbie Williams having his eleventh LP reaching the #1 slot in Germany - a feat, which I'm sure very few can be proud of. "Swings Both Ways" tops the chart 12 years after "Swing When You’re Winning" did the same. Following several TV appearances Helene Fischer's "Farbenspiel" returns to the top three, up three to #2, while last week's number one - Eminem's "
The Marshall Mathers LP 2" is down to #3. Also new inside the top ten is Eric Clapton's "Crossroads - Guitar Festival 2013" at #5.

German Chart Comments - Issue Date 22.11

(There'll be no videos for the time being)

Klingande celebrates a fourth (non-consecutive) week atop the German singles countdown, with Avicii's "Hey Brother" still at #2. At #3 Kassel-indie sensation Milky Chance moves up a position to enter the top three for the first time with "Stolen Dance".

Loathe it or admire it, but "Wrecking Ball" of Miley Cyrus has not only received two weeks ago the award for best video of M(moron)TV Europe but due to the additional publicity rises up ten to #6 in the German top 100. Thus it becomes the only song of the provocative star to enter the German top 10. Scandal definitely sells.

Though we're still in the waiting zone for a video and a proper promotion for this one, Lady Gaga's (hopefully it's the right one) follow-up to top ten hit "Applause" climbs from #26 to #17. "Do What U Want", a team-up with R Kelly, marks the 12th single of Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta in the German top 20.

Last time around I complained about the poor chart success of Robbie Williams and his latest "Go Gentle". This week he manages to make the situation a little bit rosier, with the single rising 15 to #25. The top ten, however, is still out of reach.

At #27 Drake, up from #35, is definitely going home, if the home is the top 30, as "Hold On, We're Going Home" is gaining in strength with every single week. At the same time, at #29, though for a moment it seemed that "The Fox" is not gonna be huge (it is still not) in Germany, the Ylvis party smasher at least manages to climb this week inside the top 30 by moving 13 places.

A "Wetten das" promotion and a new album behind her, it's time for Celine Dion to finally return to the brighter side of the German hitparade. In its second week on the list, "Loved Me Back To Life", the title track from Dion's freshly released album, soars to #38 from #80. Her last appearance in the chart was with 2007's minor hit "Taking Chances", which peaked at #25.

At #39 The Moody Blues return to the chart with "Nights In White Satin", with the hit from 1967 already reaching #18 in the past. Its resurrection is thanks to a recent beautiful performance on The Voice Of Germany.

The highest new entry comes as low as #46, belonging to Frei.Wild and "Verdammte Welt" and as it is 100% certain that it won't make it for a second week, let's move on to #47. There Kid Ink rises 20 with "Show Me", a collaboration with Chris Brown. Kid Ink's only top 100 single so far has been "Money and the Power", with a peak #70.

And some thoughts for the second highest new entry, which makes it barely inside the top 50. "Don't U Feel Alright" is the third single of dance project DJane HouseKat inside the countdown. In 2012 "My Party", surprisingly, peaked at #4, though I'm not sure that anyone actually remembers it.

And the other new entries this week:

52. Selig - Ohne dich
53. RY X - Berlin
59. Klingande - Punga
61. Justin Bieber - All Bad
70. Steve Aoki, Chris Lake & Tujamo - Boneless
87. Eminem feat. Sia - Beautiful Pain
88. Tinie Tempah feat. Ella Eyre - Someday (Place In The Sun)
94. Yvonne Catterfeld - Pendel
97. Icona Pop - All Night
98. OneRepublic - Something I Need
99. Jabberwocky feat. Elodie Wildstars - Photomaton

The Album Chart

This year it is extremely rare to see an album standing for a second week on top of the charts but Eminem manages the feat as his "The Marshall Mathers LP 2" is still #1. And that despite the heavy competition from The Rolling Stones and their latest "Sweet Summer Sun - Hyde Park Live", which comes at #2. At #3 Lady Gaga fails to make a greater impact with her much anticipated third album called "Artpop". Her first two albums both reached #1. "Lieder", the debut solo album of Adel Tawil, can be found at #4. Also new inside the top ten, is The Beatles' "On Air - Live At The BBC Volume 2", which arrives at #8.

German Chart Comments - Issue Date 15.11

(There'll be no videos for the time being)

Klingande's "Jubel" clocks up a third week on top of the German singles hitparade, proving that its climb to the summit was not an one-off. Up one, to #2, is Avicii's former chart topper "Hey Brother", while "Monster" of Eminem and Rihanna moves up four to #3 in its second week in the Top 100. It thus becomes the sixth top three single of the US rapper, who this week also makes new peaks with "Survival" (up from #32 to #20) and "Rap God" (up to #33 from #44). Oh, and Eminem also managed to crown the album chart with a splash.

At #7 "Timber" of Pitbull, with the help of Ke$ha rises six positions to be marked as Pitbull's sixth top ten single in Germany as a lead artist.

Worldwide phenomenal "Royals" of Lorde has finally reached the top ten in Germany and this week edges up two to #9.

As it is the trend these days (look at Eminem, Gaga, Bieber), Adel Tawil has released a new single a week after his "Lieder" entered at #2 (this week down to #6). However, the new "
Aschenflug", which features Sido and Prinz Pi and appears at #18 this week, looks to be a proper single, with a video and promotion, so well done for him. And, though, I really like the track, I still think that it sounds a lot like "Vom selben Stern", one of Ich + Ich biggest hits, which makes me wonder why Adel needed this solo career at all...

Speaking of Gaga, the Lady has (of course) a new song in the top 100. This time, it is "Dope" at #34.

At #35 it is interesting to observe how US star Drake slowly but steadily is making "Hold On, We're Going Home" his first ever hit in Germany. The song moves up four.

Germany was one of the few countries where the superstar status of Robbie Williams was unharmed with every pilot single from his albums since 2001 reaching the top three. Now, however, though "Go Gentle" marks the release of "Swing Both Ways", it stumbles at #40. Robbie was last in the Top 100 with "Different", which reached #31 last year.

And last for the top 50, we have a serious question - which is the current single of Rihanna? Is it "Pour It Up", which is on heavy rotation on the "music" channels, or is it "What Is Now", which has had no video until today? Yes, apparently it is the latter, which soars from #84 to #49.

And the other new entries this week:

53. Olli Schulz & Bernd Begemann - Du Bist Verhaftet Wegen Sexy
61. Damien Rice - 9 Crimes
63. Madeline Juno - Error
66. Justin Bieber - Bad Day
78. Britney Spears - Perfume
80. Celine Dion - Loved Me Back To Life
83. London Grammar - Strong
86. Katy Perry - Unconditionally

The Album Chart

Following two #2 albums Eminem has his fourth #1 album in Germany with "The Marshall Mathers LP 2". In 2000 the first "The Marshall Mathers LP" reached #3. Helene Fischer is still at #2, promising to stay in the top three forever with "Farbenspiel", while Fettes Brot's "3 Is Ne Party" enters at #3. The LP thus manages to repeat the peak of Fettes Brot best performing album so far - "Strom und Drang" from 2008. Also new in the top 10 is the third album of German rapper Summer Cem as "Babas Barbies & Bargeld" lands at #5, while Celine Dion's "Loved Me Back To Life" arrives at #10.

German Chart Comments - Issue Date 8.11

(There'll be no videos for the time being)

This week Klingande's "Jubel" manages once again to reach the top slot after giving it up to Avicii's "Hey Brother" last time around. Thus "Jubel" spends a second non-consecutive week as #1, while "Hey Brother" slips two to #3.

In between we have the highest new entry coming from Adel Tawil. "Lieder" marks the first solo single of the Ich + Ich singer and its success shows that Adel Tawil has managed to find the right path. As part of duo Ich + Ich, Adel had one number one hit with "Pflaster", while the great "Stark" peaked also at #2.

Just prior to the release of his new album, Eminem has put on the market yet another song after "Berzerk" (peak #10), "Survival" (peak #32) and "Rap God" (peak #42). This time, with the support of Rihanna, he has made it significantly better as "The Monster" arrives straight at #7 to become Eminem's 14th top ten single. Of course, "Love the Way You Lie", the previous Eminem & RiRi collaboration reached #1.

Within the top 20, Lorde's "Royals" continues to climb, this week at #11 from #17, while Pitbull and Kesha's "Timber" moves seven to #13.

Though their previous single "The Best Song Ever" peaked at #20, One Direction continue to miss the top 20 in Germany as their latest, "Story Of My Life", enters at #23. It is the fourth top 30 single of the boys in Germany.

At #26 we have Lady Gaga's "Do What U Want" moving up one to #26, while "Venus", a new promotional track (or is it a single?) from her new album, arrives this week at #35.

At #31 The BossHoss' "Do It" makes a new peak, up from #35, while Eminem's "Survival" rises to #32 from #52.

After the success of "Animals" of Martin Garrix, it is no strange to see similar songs in the upper reaches of the chart. This time Belgian brothers Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike bring "Project T" at #33, which becomes the second single of the duo to enter the German charts after "Mammoth" reached #90 earlier this year.

Following his uncredited provision of the vocals for "Wake Me Up" of Avicii this summer, Aloe Black has released his own take on the song, which this week succeeds in entering the top 50 at #42, up from #71. Aloe Black has had two hit singles on his account so far - "I Need A Dollar" (peak #4) and "Loving You Is Killing Me" (peak #12).

After last week Justin Bieber's latest weekly offering missed the top 50, this week he makes it a little better with "Recovery" at #50.

And the other new entries this week:

67. Lou Reed - Walk On The Wild Side
71. Prince Kay One feat. Farid Bang - Helal Money
95. Prince Kay One feat. Emory - Ich hass es dich zu lieben
96. Prince Kay One - Pushen
98. Prince Kay One feat. Juh-Dee - Rich Kidz
100. Deep Purple - Above And Beyond

The Album Chart

After a three week stay at #1, and already becoming the most sold album of the year, Helene Fischer's "Farbenspiel" slips this week to #2, leaving the way for local rapper Prince Kay One and his " Rich Kidz" to crown the charts. Together with Bushido and Fler, the rapper, then known as Kay One, brought "Berlins Most Wanted" to #2 in 2010. At #3, "48", becomes the most successful album of Ina Müller, while "Recharged" of Linkin Park enters at #4. Also new at #6 is Arcade Fire's "Reflektor", David Garrett's soundtrack "Garrett vs Paganini" enters at #8, while "Viel zu lang gewartet" of veteran Howard Carpendale appears at #9.

German Chart Comments - Issue Date 1.11

(There'll be no videos for the time being)

Somewhat expectedly Avicii's "Hey Brother" has climbed to the top slot in Germany to become his second number one after "Wake Me Up" was there this summer. The song continues to be without a video and promotion, which makes its presence at the top even more interesting.

After a one-week stay at #1, "Jubel" of Klingande slips one to two, while James Blunt's former number one sticks to #3.

On the rise this week continues to be Milky Chance and "Stolen Dance", which moves up three to #4, while at #9, up from #22, we can found "Lifesaver" of Finnish band Sunrise Avenue. The song, which benefits from the band's vocalist participation as a coach in The Voice Of Germany, becomes the third single of the boys to make it inside the top ten next to "Fairytale Gone Bad" and "Hollywood Hills", which both peaked at #3. (Oh, and these songs even re-enter the countdown this week at #46 and #36, respectively.)

Prince Kay One made a brief but a memorable appearance at #4 earlier this year with "V.I.P.". Now the German rapper follows that with "Keep Calm (Fuck U)" at #11.

Slowly on the rise inside the top 20 we have this week Lorde's "Royals", up one to #17, Bastille's "Things We Lost In The Fire", up two to #18 and Pitbull and Kesha's "Timber", up one to #20.

The second highest new entry of the week belongs to Lady Gaga and the second single from her much anticipated album "Artpop". "Do What U Want" appears this week at #27, on the back of "Applause", which despite a steady presence in the top 20, managed to reach only #5. The new song also marks the return of R Kelly in the top 100 since 2007.

Further down the top 50, it's up three for Ylvis and "The Fox", this week at #38, and five for Drake's "We're Going Home", which occupies #39.

And the other new entries this week:

54. James Arthur - You're Nobody 'til Somebody Loves
56. Justin Bieber - Hold Tight
63. Tyga ft. Justin Bieber - Wait For A Minute
64. Mark Forster - Zu dir (Weit weg)
71. Aloe Blacc - Wake Me Up
81. Katy Perry ft. Juicy J - Dark Horse
86. Booka Shade - Love Inc
91. Avril Lavigne ft. Chad Kroeger - Let Me Go

The Album Chart

Despite the arrival of four new entries inside the top five, no one is able to stop the monstrous sales of Helene Fischer's "Farbenspiel", which spends a third consecutive week on top. The new album of James Blunt, "Moon Landing", leads the newcomers at #2 (now the UK singer has two #1 and two #2 albums). Sunrise Avenue have their best charting album as "Unholy Ground" enters at #3, followed by the latest of Katy Perry at #4. "Prism" is, strangely, the first album of Katy Perry to chart higher than #5. Next up, at #5, we can found the latest LP of Motorhead called "Aftershock". Also new in the top ten at #10 is Bosca's "Solange Es Schlägt".

German Chart Comments - Issue Date 25.10

(There'll be no videos for the time being)

From one of the stranger number ones this year to the next one as French dance project Klingande rises with "Jubel" four to become the new king of the German singles chart. Even more surprisingly, "Hey Brother" of Avicii shoots itself from #10 to #2, on its way to become the second biggest hit of the Swedish musician in the country even without a video and official release. That leads us to James Blunt and his "Bonfire Heart", which slips to three from a one-week stay at #1.

Local curiosity, Milky Chance makes it this week to the top ten with "Stolen Dance" as the song goes up eleven to #7.

Further down the chart, Lorde's "Royals" enters the top 20 at #18, up from #39, while the highest new entry belongs to Depeche Mode at #19. The band continues to surprise with their fanbase in the country, so it is not strange that "Should Be Higher", the third single from their multi-selling "Delta Machine", makes it inside the top 20. It even improves on the #22 peak of previous single "Soothe My Soul".

Officially Bastille managed to have a new hit in Germany as "Things We Lost In The Fire", the follow-up to "Pompeii" (peak #6), climbs six to #20.

A position behind the UK band, the explosive combination of Pitbull and Kesha called "Timber" skyrockets to #21 from #90. It is the eleventh single of Pitbull in the top 30.

At #33 Eminem's "Survival" moves up five in its second week in the chart. The US star has even brought another single to the chart this week as "Rap Gold" debuts at #42.

On the back of a performance on the Supertalent show, Celine Dion's 90s French song "Pour Que Tu M'Aimes Encore" reappears at #39. The song was never a hit back in the 1990s.

Further down, at #41, Ylvis and "The Fox" moves up four, while the every new week new single policy brings a new song of Justin Bieber at #46. It is called "All That Matters".

And the other new entries this week:

63. Dicks On Fire Feat. Lena - Revolution
72. Helene Fischer - Mit Keinem Andern
80. Brings - Kölsche Jung
91. Rihanna - What Now

The Album Chart

Helene Fischer is only the third act this year to manage to have two back-to-back stays as a number one in the album chart as her "Farbenspiel" is unmovable. After two albums with peaks at #4, The BossHoss have their biggest album yet with the arrival of "Flames Of Fame" at #2. Andrea Berg's "Atlantis" follows at #3, while three new offerings can be found at positions four to six. At #4 Pearl Jam's "Lightning Bolt" becomes the band's fourth album to peak at #4 in Germany (previous LP "
Backspacer" reached #3). A position behind, local band Jupiter Jones have their first top ten album with "Das Gegenteil Von Allem", while Paul McCartney's "New" is new at #6. VNV Nation have their second top ten album as "TransNational" enters at #9, while Trivium's "Vengeance Falls" is also their second album to ever crack the top ten as it arrives at #10.

German Chart Comments - Issue Date 18.10

(There'll be no videos for the time being)

This week sees one of the most unexpected number ones this year as James Blunt's comeback single tops easily the German charts. The great "Bonfire Heart" comes as a pilot single of Blunt's "Moon Landing" LP and beats the #2 peaks of "You're Beautiful" and "1973". So, though many have considered him to be a one-hit wonder, the former soldier has once again proved that he is far from that. "Bonfire Heart", written with the help of One Republic's frontman and in the vein of the current indie-folk hype, arrives in the German charts two years after "I’ll Be Your Man" reached #40. It also becomes Blunt's fourth top ten single in Germany.

Thus, after spending three long weeks as #1, Jason Derulo's "Talk Dirty" slips to two, while the third position is once again held by "Dear Darlin'" and Olly Murs.

At #5 Klingande's "Jubel" moves up a slot to claim a new peak, while at #10 Avicii's "Hey Brother" shows that no one cares whether a song is officially released or not as the album track shoots itself from #22 and becomes the third song of the Swedish star to enter the top ten. Hopefully, the amazing tune will get a video at some point.

"Kuss Kuss Kuss", the previous single of local hip hop trio Fettes Brot, somewhat underperformed by reaching #35 earlier this year. Now the boys are back with a better song and a better placement as "Echo", which by the looks of it, will be the second single from Fettes Brot new album, enters at #12. It's the seventh single of Fettes Brot to reach the top 20, where they were last with "Bettina, zieh dir bitte etwas an" (peak #3) in 2008.

At #13 Finnish band Sunrise Avenue show once again their chart strength in Germany as their new single "Lifesaver" enters the chart to turn into the boys' third top 20 single, next to the #3 hits "Fairytale Gone Bad" and " Hollywood Hills". Last Sunrise Avenue were in the chart with "I Don’t Dance", which peaked at #33 in 2011.

A position behind, Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" is slowly cementing its status as her biggest hit to date, as the song moves up two to #14. At #16 we have another curious single storming the countdown. "Stolen Dance", the debut single of Kassel-born Clemens Rehbein, or as he is known in the list Milky Chance, was released in August but now finds its strength and flies from #64.

At #26 Bastille's "Things We Lost In The Fire" is starting to slow down its upward movement by advancing by just one position from #27.

At #32 we can found "Heartbreaker", the first single from Justin Bieber's plans to flood the market with a new song every week (to what effect this will influence the German charts, only time will tell). The song arrives after the #53 peak of "All Around the World". And yes, he still is lacking a top ten single.

At #36, up from #45, "Work Bitch", the latest offering of Britney Spears manages to equal the peak position of the star's least performing single in Germany ("If U Seek Amy"). The glory days now seem long gone.

After "Berzerk" (this week at #17) reached #10 a couple of weeks ago, Eminem brings even fresher material to the charts as "Survival" debuts this week at #38.

At #39 New Zealand's sensation Lorde is finally enjoying a top 50 presence as her US topper "Royals" moves up from #57. Several weeks ago Lorde entered the chart with "Tennis Court", which stumbled at #83.

Also on the rise is Drake's (best hit so far) "Hold On Were Going Home", which advances from #60 to #41, to become Drake's first ever single as a lead artist to enter the German top 50. Shamefully never getting the promotion he deserves, the US star has had only one song as a lead artist in the German charts so far - "Find Your Love", with a one-week stay at #65.

Further down the list, Voxxclub's catchy "Rock mi" moves two to #44, while the even catchier and phenomenal/awful (delete as appropriate) "The Fox" of Ylvis is finally inside the top 50 as it rises from #61 to #45.

Coinciding with the release of her new album, Helene Fischer's "Atemlos Durch Die Nacht" makes it inside the top 50 at #46 as a cherry-pick track.

At #48 though more or less Passenger is going to have a tough time not to be considered a one-hit wonder, he follows his #1 hit "Let Her Go" with "Holes", which climbs four.

And finally, this week sees the return of one Cher with new material. The legendary star has been absent from the chart since "Alive Again" peaked at #27 in 2001 and now is back with "I Hope You Find It" entering at #49 (fellow track "Woman’s World" is at #66). Cher's biggest hit in Germany is of course 1998's number one "Believe".

And the other new entries this week:

62. Marco Angelini - Wunder Gibt Es Immer Wieder
66. Cher - Woman's World
86. Pearl Jam - Sirens
90. Pitbull ft. Ke$ha - Timber
96. Sportfreunde Stiller - New York Rio Rosenheim

The Album Chart

Coming with mega-sales, of which even Andrea Berg can be envy, Helene Fischer crowns the album chart with her latest album "Farbenspiel", which follows the 2011 #1 LP "Für einen Tag". The schlager dominance continues with Andrea Berg at #2 as her "Atlantis" rises one, while Casper's "Hinterland" is down two to three. "Planet Der Lieder", the latest album of volksmusik veterans Kastelruther Spatzen comes new at #4, matching the peak of their best performing album so far "Und Singen ist Gold" from 2006. A new version of "Fire It Up" sees the return of Joe Cocker's latest album at #5, while Cher's "Closer To The Truth" debuts at #6. Cher's LP manages to reach the peak of her 1991 "Love Hurts" but is still far from the #1 "Believe". Also new inside the top ten is the latest from Korn. "The Paradigm Shift" enters at #7 - a considerable improvement from the #28 peak of their previous studio album. Interestingly, despite being home of her biggest singles to date, "Bangerz", the new album of Miley Cyrus, fails to reach the #4 peak of her previous one by entering at #9.

German Chart Comments - Issue Date 11.10

Jason Derulo spends a third week on top of Germany's singles chart with his "Talk Dirty", with Katy Perry moving once again to #2 with "Roar" (up from #4) and Olly Murs' "Dear Darlin" slipping one to three.

At #4 "Animals", the dance anthem of Martin Garrix, advances a position from #5, while Klingande's excellent "Jubel" enters the top ten in its third week on the list by soaring six to #6. Also new in the top ten is "Hero" by Family Of The Year, which moves up four to #7 after a steady climb over the last few weeks.

Thanks to the new vocal version Klangkarussell's "Sonnentanz" has once again entered the top ten and is this week at #10, up from #14.

Alligatoah's "Willst Du" also continues its successful climb and after leaving the top 20 for a week makes it back at #14, an increase from #22.

Though "You Make Me" (this week at #49) is still Avicii's current single, album track and great tune "Hey Brother" is gaining more and more attention and is doing quite better as it is up six to #22.

The highest new entry for the week can be found at #23 coming from local band Jupiter Jones. The guys are most famous with "Still", which hit #10 back in 2011. "Rennen+Stolpern", which heralds the release of their third album, is the fourth single of Jupiter Jones to make it inside the top 100 and also the second most successful one.

It is strange how no one paid attention when Bosse released "So Oder So" several weeks ago as the song spend a week at the low end of the chart. Now, however, after winning the local Bundesvision contest (it is like Eurovision but for the different German states), the amazing song shoots itself from #96 to #25. It thus beats the #27 peak of Bosse's previous single "Schönste Zeit".

Video

Further down the top 50, Bastille's "Things We Lost In The Fire" is slowly advancing towards the top 20 as it moves four to #27.

Video

In its second week in the chart Max Herre's "Fremde" climbs from #53 to #32, becoming the fourth solo top 50 single of the ex-Freundeskreis singer. At #37, after a weak debut at #89 last week, "Der Letzte Blick", Xavier Naidoo's follow-up to #2 hit "Bei meiner Seele", makes a big jump as a result of the song participation in this year's Bundesvision contest.

Also thanks to his Bundesvision appearance Johannes Oerding has his first ever top 50 single with "Nichts Geht Mehr". The song is up to #43 from #64.

And finally, the official release of DJ Antoine Vs Mad Mark's "House Party" sees the song re-entering the countdown at #44. It's the third single taken from DJ Antoine's "Sky Is The Limit" album, which has produced two #15-hits so far.

The Album Chart

In the album chart local rapper Casper follows his first major album "XOXO" with another number one record as the excellent "Hinterland" debuts straight at the top. At #2 enters German medieval metal band In Extremo and their " Kunstraub". The band's previous two LPs reached the #1 slot. Last week number one album, "Atlantis" by Andrea Berg is down to #3, while the second part of Justin Timberlake's 2013 comeback "The 20 / 20 Experience-2 Of 2" is new at #4. Birdy's sophomore album "Fire Within" arrives at #5, improving on the 16 peak of "Birdy". Also new, at #7, is "Fortress" of US rock band Alter Bridge, which becomes the guys' first ever top ten album in Germany.

German Chart Comments - Issue Date 4.10

Hate it or love it, it's a second week for Jason Derulo's "Talk Dirty" at the top of the German singles chart. He is followed by Olly Murs' "Dear Darlin", which recoups two positions and sits comfortably at #2. Thus the song now needs only a little push to become Olly's second number one, next to "My Heart Skips A Beat". It at least matches the #2 peak of "Troublemaker". The top three is rounded by Avicii's "Wake Me Up", which is down one from #2.

Further down the top ten, "Papaoutai" of Stromae advances this week to #6, proving that Germany unlike UK welcomes foreign and non-English music on its shores.

Video - Stromae

Showing once again what a chart force they are, Linkin Park bring "A Light That Never Comes", their collaboration with Steve Aoki, this week to #8 from #27 where they entered seven days ago. It's the sixth top ten single of the US rockers in Germany.

Lyric Video - Linkin Park

A couple of weeks ago I expected Eminem's comeback single "Berzerk" to be his next top ten single, but as the song slipped to #28 last week, I thought I was definitely wrong. Still, boosted perhaps by physical sales (do they matter any more?) "Berzerk" moves up eighteen and can be found at #10. The song does becomes Eminem's 13th top ten single - a feat which only a handful of male artists can be proud of.

Video

At #11 Family Of The Year's "Hero" continues its rise, up from #19, while French project Klingande and "Jubel" is also on the right path, as it moves in its second week from #30 to #12.

Video - Family of the Year

The schlager music can be the definitive ruler of the album charts at the moment, but as I've written before, there have been only a few singles matching this success (and curiously most of them come from male musicians). The things are, however, starting to slowly change as this week we see "Fehlerfrei" of schlager princess Helene Fischer entering at #20. It heralds the release of Fischer's new album (which will most certainly hit the #1 slot soon) and becomes the first ever top 20 single of the star. Her best performing song so far chart-wise has been "Ich will immer wieder … dieses Fieber spürn", which peaked at #30.

Audio

Five positions behind Helene, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis register their third top thirty single with "Same Love", which climbs seven to #25.

Video - Macklemore & Ryan Lewis

After entering the top 50 last week, Bastille continue their climb with "Things We Lost In The Fire", which somewhat surprisingly shoots itself to #31 from #50.
Video

Britney Spears' latest "Work Bitch" is also on the rise, as the song moves up four positions to #37 in its second week in the countdown. Now with a released video, it may even go higher.

Video

We also have a re-entry of Cologne-based band Voxxclub with "Rock mi" at #45, while Passenger is following his global smash hit "Let Her Go" with "Holes" at #50. The song is up from #57.

The Album Chart

After giving up the throne in the albums chart to Die Aerzte (they are now down to #5), schlager queen Andrea Berg expectedly returns to #1 with "Atlantis". "Mechanical Bull", the latest album of Kings Of Leon debuts at #2, missing the #1 peak of their previous LP. Sting's "The Last Ship" is new at #3 becoming a yet another top ten album of the veteran star. Dream Theater's self-titled LP arrives new at #4. Two years ago the rock band peaked at #3 with "A Dramatic Turn of Events". Katie Melua's sixth studio album misses the top three unlike her four previous recordings. "Ketevan" can still be found at #6, two places above the soundtrack to "Metallica: Through The Never". "Immer In Bewegung", the fourth album of local band Revolverheld, comes in at #9 and for now becomes their worst performing one in terms of peak positions.

German Chart Comments - Issue Date 27.09

The ten-week reign of Avicii on the top has finally come to an end with the arrival of the latest single of Jason Derulo. "Talk Dirty", which so heavily features the extremely popular in Bulgaria pop-folk rhythms (the genre's called chalga) that I can't stand it, flies directly at #1. This is Derulo's first number one in Germany, while the superior "Breathing", which actually samples authentic Bulgarian folklore, reached #5. The singer's previous single, and the first taken from his latest album, "The Other Side" peaked at #35.
Video

Thus "Wake Me Up" of Avicii slips one to two, followed by Katy Perry's "Roar", which failed to take the crown and is this week down to #3.

"Animals" of Martin Garrix is this week up three to #5, while Woodkid's amazing "Run Boy Run" shoots itself from #26 to #11 in its second week on the top 100, proving the power of Vodafone commercials for yet another time.
Video - Martin Garrix

The third single of Imagine Dragons in Germany also becomes their third top 20 hit as "On Top Of The World" advances to #13 from #22, beating the #20 peak of "It's Time". "Radioactive" reached #4 several months ago.

Audio - Imagine Dragons

Last week Miley Cyrus' "We Can't Stop" reached #16 to become her most successful song in Germany, a feat which is this week matched by her next single as "Wrecking Ball" moves up from #25 to #16.
Video - Wrecking Ball

Also new to the top 20 is "Hero" of Family Of The Year, up from #24 to #19 and already a candidate for the most surprising hit of the year, as well as Alligatoah's "Willst du", which makes its indecent proposal for drugs abuse at #20, up from #23.

Video - Alligatoah
Video - Family of the Year

The highest new entry comes from the man of the moment as Avicii's "Hey Brother" enters as an album cut at #24. Three positions behind the Swedish DJ, we find the return of Linkin Park with "A Light That Never Comes" - a collaboration with Steve Aoki, which marks the forthcoming release of Linkin Park's second album with remixes called "Recharged". "Castle of Glass", the previous single of the rock band in Germany, peaked at #10.
Audio - Avicii
Lyric Video - Linkin Park

Also new in the top 100 and in the vein of Klangkarussel's "Sonnentanz" comes Klingande and the similarly great "Jubel" at #30.

Video

German band The Bosshoss followed their #8 hit "Don’t Gimme That" in 2011 with two minor singles in the lower end of the chart but now the boys are back with fresh material and "Do It" makes a more respectable new entry at #31. It is the third top 40 single of The Bosshoss.
Video

A position behind The Bosshoss, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis move up six with "Same Love", while the comeback single of Britney Spears arrives at #41. "Work Bitch" is the pilot single of Britney's eight studio album and if it does not advance any further for now becomes her least performing charting single in Germany (Smurfs' extravaganza "Ooh La La" not included).
Video - Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
Audio - Britney Spears

Though they still have a long way to walk before removing the one-hit wonder stigma ("Pompeii peaked at #6), UK band Bastille are on the right path as follow-up single "Things We Lost In The Fire" shoots 21 positions up and is at #50.

The Album Chart

Since 2003 Die Ärzte have topped the album chart with every new release and now even the massive sales of Andrea Berg could not prevent that as their live offering - "Die Nacht der Dämonen" enters directly at #1, becoming the fifth consecutive album of the band to do so, and the eight in their career. Thus "Atlantis" of Andrea Berg slips to two, while Schiller's "Opus" is down to seven, amid a completely new top ten. At #3 we have Placebo's "Loud Like Love", at #4 BAP's founder Niedecken with "Zosamme Alt", Avicii's "True" is at #5, while rapper SSIO's "BB.U.M.SS.N" enters at #6. Further down the latest offering of rapper Fler "Maskulin Mixtape Vol. 3" is new at #8, Jack Johnson's "From Here To Now To You" is at #9, British deathmetal band Carcass' "Surgical Steel" is at #10 and Elton John's "The Diving Board" comes in at #11.
