Тайните служби на Дядо Коледа / Arthur Christmas - Ho ho ho, it's good that with the coming of the winter holidays comes the best animated movie of the year (Tintin not taken into account). Created by UK studio Aardman Animations, the makers of now modern classics Chicken Run, Wallace & Gromit and Flushed Away, this story on the Santa Clause family will surprise many with its wit, sharp dialogue, memorable characters and irresistible charm. Although centred around the titular character, the younger son of Santa, the movie has a lot to offer with the ones in the background. The old Santa grandpa, his reindeer dog (yes, really) and the elf-packaging specialist rank among the best written supporting characters on celluloid lately. But what holds the film together is the attention paid to every detail of the story. The script, though telling a fairytale, feels believable and authentic. As if there really are elves and a giant sledge spaceship travelling around the globe each Christmas. Furthermore, the the numerous catchphrases and clever scenes mean that Arthur Christmas will be watched by kids and grown-ups not only this winter but in the future too. And this really defines a film as a true Christmas classic. (Alexandra) ****1/2

Кожата, в която живея / The Skin I Live In - Almodovar is among those directors who has rarely (almost never) taken a wrong step in their careers. Thus, his latest arrives with the hype of being his first ever attempt in the horror genre, which is neither entirely true nor false. You cannot expect a film like Saw or (thankfully) The Human Centipede  from a man such as Pedro, who is, and has always been, interested foremost in the complex relationships between people. The Skin I Live In deals with themes such as love, loss, guilt, redemption and unlike his previous efforts, this time around the tone is deliberately tuned down. It's not that the film lacks any of the typical Almodovar humour, but the feeling of darkness reigns over it and may repel those keen to experience once again his light touches. At the same time it's a movie whose every single scene screams Almodovar - from the use of colours and music, to the clothes which the characters wear and the appearance of old muses Antonio Banderas and Marisa Paredes. The strongest weapon of the movie, however, is its script. You know that, unlike most of the fellow bloggers or Bulgarian critics, I reveal almost zero details of the films' plot, so this time around I'll not even attach the trailer. Go and watch it (it's on a very limited release as great films often are) with an empty mind! (ProFilms) ****

Корумпирани ченгета / The Son Of No One - This cop drama wanna-be suffers from one major flaw - it doesn't know in what genre to fall in. From there the movie fails at so many levels, that even its brief running time (around 90 minutes) feels like a three-hour epоs. And not in a good way. First, it could not be a cop thriller as the writers didn't put enough meat in the arcs of any of the characters, and especially in the supporting ones. We are supposed to not care why Al Pacino or Ray Liotta act as they act, or what drives Juliette Binoche's behaviour. On the other hand, The Son Of No One could not be a human drama as Channing Tatum, who is the protagonist of the story, doesn't have the acting chops to bear such. And at the end, the big reveal is so stupid, incoherent and lacking of any logic, that it's a shame that the Tatum-director Dito Montiel tandem has come up with such a misfire after two relatively solid films. German Chart Comments - Issue Date 25.11

(Someone is having a really good feeling this week)

We have a busy pre-holiday week this time as 15 new entries make their way into the top 100. They are led by Flo Rida's amazingly popular single "Good Feeling". The song, which is actually based on Avicii's "Levels" (which this week falls to #7), is the pilot single of Flo Rida's latest album and easily becomes the US star first ever German number one. Didn't I tell you last time that Germans are into dance music currently?
Video

What is more interesting is even that last week's number one, Rihanna's "We Found The Love", falls to #3, while Aura Dione's unstoppable "Geronimo" still holds on to the runner-up slot.
Video - Rihanna
Audio - Aura Dione

At the same time the competition is intensified by Lana Del Rey and her "Video Games", which deservingly goes up six positions and sits pretty just outside the top three.
Video

The second highest new entry belongs to Rammstein, easily the most famous band to sing in German worldwide. With an already sold out tour, the guys will release their first ever Greatest Hits album, with "Mein Land", which debuts at #5, the only new track. Despite that all expectations are for the track to fall massively next week, it becomes the group's ninth top ten single.

Further down the countdown, Foster The People's "Pumped Up Kicks" has made it into the top 20 in its third week. The global hit soars from #32 to #20.
Video

Two positions behind, Pietro Lombardi releases a new material after his number one "Call My Name" and his duet with Sarah Engels "Miss You" (peak #2). "Goin' To LA", which does not feature in Lombardi's debut album, however struggles to make it to the top 20 and with that rate we can expect everyone to forget about the latest winner of DSDS in a year time.
Video

At #39 Finnish band Nightwish return to the chart in the 12th year after their "Sleeping Sun" peaked at #34. "Storytime" is the first single taken from the group's "Imaginaerum" LP and becomes their seventh top 50 single in Germany.

A place below the Finnish rockers, newcomer Ardian Bujupi brings his debut song "This Is My Time" to the top 100. Of course, the interest is triggered by Bujupi's participation in DSDS, where it ranked third behind Lombardi and Engels.
Video

Next up is local band The Bosshoss, whose "Don't Gimme That" fails by a notch to beat their best peaking song "Hey Ya!". The new single enters at #42.

At #44 Lady Gaga's "Marry The Night" makes a "premature" new entry. Still, the song prospects to climb are not to be underestimated as it will gain airplay in the weeks to come.
Live

The next new entry is the perfect example for the forthcoming holidays as schlager singer Christian Franke teams up with panpipes player Edward Simoni to come back to the singles chart with "Apfelbaum" at #45. Franke has had a top ten single in 1981 with "Ich wünsch' dir die Hölle auf Erden (wenn du heut' gehst)".

The song at #48 shows that someone has not forgotten the success of "We No Speak Americano" from last year and tries to copy the formula but in German. "Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen", was made first popular in 1938 by the Andrew Sisters, though it dates way back to 1932. The new version belongs to Ilhama and DJ OGB and I personally expected to be a little more successful than this...

And the remaining new entries with videos and some info:

#54 Justin Bieber - Mistletoe - Poor Justin, even a Christmas song could not make him popular enough in Germany. The teen girls may scream their lungs out but he still has no top 10 single.
Video

#58 Remady Feat. Manu-L - Give Me A Sign - The Swiss DJs are just unstoppable right now. Just look at the next new entry at #70!
Video

#70 DJ Bobo - Everybody's Gonna Dance - We have to give it to the man. Hate him or love him, the Swiss star has had 33 top 100 singles in his 19-year long career.
Video

#80 Professor Green Feat. Emeli Sande - Read All About It - I didn't expect this UK #1 to make it to Germany so quickly. It's not that someone has paid any attention...
Video

#82 Tom Lüneburger & Stefanie Kloß - We Are One - Yes, I personally don't know who that guy is, but Stefanie has had more fame as part of Silbermond. We need a new album soon!
Video

#92 Evanescence - My Heart Is Broken - Oh, somehow this time, Nightwish have done it better. The second single from Evanescence's last album makes it even worse than the #84 peak of "What You Want".

The Album Chart

Kool Savas' arrival in the album charts puts an end to the reign of Udo Lindenberg. Thus "Aura" becomes the rapper's first ever number one LP in the country. Snow Patrol has made a new career-best as their newest "Fallen Empires" comes fresh at #3. Also new to the top ten are the German Il Divo, or known as Adoro and their "Liebe meines Lebens" at #4.

Bulgarian Boxoffice Update - Weekend 18-20 November

Who cares about the BO on a secluded island?
I skipped the last week boxoffice comments but now they are back and to the max. The Twilight phenomenon, unfortunately or not, hasn't bypassed Bulgaria and has stormed the cinema charts. The latest instalment of the hollowest franchise ever (it's the truth, fans!) swept the boxoffice this weekend with BGN 187,933. In comparison, the third part made BGN 253,976 in its debut, which shows that all is not as rosy as it looks this time around. Still, I expect the fourth film to earn a respectable amount of money in its entire run in the country.

Last week's champion Immortals retreats with the excellent 35% this weekend and already boasts the majestically strong BGN 414,537. By the looks of it, we will have one of the most successful movie not backed by a major Hollywood studio in Bulgaria. (That, if the distributor, as it tends to do, doesn't decide to withdraw the film from the chart in the forthcoming weeks.)

Bulgarian behemoth Operacia Shmenti Kapeli continues its impressive run and, with BGN 904,001 so far, is steadily heading towards the 1 million threshold.

Also showing a great staying power, In Time falls with 32% to #4 and already has earned BGN 450,276 in the boxoffice.

After a slow start, Tower Heist stabilises with a decrease of 25% and for three weeks the comedy has made BGN 138,623 in total.

Thankfully The Adventures of Tintin has also managed to find its feet and with a fall of 30% at #6, the film's cumulative results stands at BGN 102,501 at present.

It's a high time for The Smurfs hysteria to finally fade away but, as it seems, it won't happen soon (the DVD is out soon!!!). The children movie even rises by 7% this weekend and already has BGN 1,101,063 on its account.

Following a spectacularly solid debut in the previous weekend, Midnight in Paris shows the biggest decline of 48% at #8. The latest Woody Allen flick has drawn BGN 59,330 so far.

Kecove, maybe the best Bulgarian movie of the year, falls 56%, with BGN 220,383 totally. The top ten is rounded up by The Three Musketeers, which has BGN 400,595 so far.

This weekend, the top ten is left by Spy Kids 4, which is slowly closing its run with about BGN 300,000. Too much for perhaps the worst movie of 2011.

Next weekend's projections:

Arthur Christmas - BGN 95,000 (it's awesome)
Son of No One - BGN 45,000 (it's pathetic)
The Skin I Live In - BGN 35,000 (don't hold your breath for any official figures)

(BGN 1 = USD 0.69/EUR 0.51)

German Chart Comments - Issue Date 18.11

(Rihanna's has definitely found the love at the top, while it's better late than never for Udo)

It's a third non-consecutive week at the top for Rihanna in Germany as her "We Found Love" sticks to the #1. The top three is steady as a whole, with both Aura Dione's "Geronimo" and Taio Cruz's (drinking hymn) "Hangover" keeping their positions.

The highest new entry comes in at #4, belonging to German legend Udo Lindenberg. "Cello" is the second single taken from Udo's current MTV Unplugged album after "Ein Herz kann man nicht reparieren" reached #11. "Cello" marks the most successful song of Udo in Germany (at least in terms of peak positions) in his now 40-year long career. And the fact that he collaborates with hot young acts (on this one with Clueso - "Cello" is also a new best for him) may have helped for the veteran to reach younger audience and thus to find himself in the upper reaches of the German singles chart again after "Sonderzug nach Pankow" reached #5 in 1983.

As Germans are definitely into dance music this year, the latest single of Swedish producer Avicii storms the countdown at #6. "Levels" comes after Leona Lewis' "Collide" (whose music belongs to Avicci) was not allowed to chart in Germany in order to prevent her from having a complete flop. Avicii, active for three years now, has been known for some time in the dance charts, but this is the first time he has a major hit on his account. The song, which samples "Something's Got a Hold On Me" of Etta James, arrives just several weeks prior to Flo Rida's take on the classic, which is also based on Avicii's music and is already promising to be a monster hit.

Meanwhile Adele's "Someone Like You" registers a new peak at #5, as do David Guetta's "Without You" at #7 and Lana Del Rey's "Video Games" at #10.

After hovering for weeks in the top 20 of the download charts, Bruno Mars' amazing "Marry You" is finally allowed to chart in the official listings. The song enters at #16 and becomes Bruno's fourth single as a lead artist to reach the top 20. All we need is a video now, though I doubt that such will appear soon. At the same time, Mars' Twilight single rises to #36 and perhaps will find itself in the top 30 again boosted by the vampire movie hysteria.

Also new to the top 100 is Culcha Candela's "Hungry Eyes", which with the same formula enters at #18 and becomes the guys' eight hit in the top 20.

At the same time, after the misfire "Noboby's Perfect", Jessie J brings "Domino", her fourth single for Germany, new at #22. The song is her second most successful in the country after "Price Tag" peaked at #3.

After a slow start at #49 last week, Foster The People will eventually add Germany to its list of a worldwide domination as "Pumped Up Kicks" soars to #32 and is shooting towards the top 20 as we speak.

And the remaining new entries with videos and some info:
#56 Michael Mind Project - Rio De Janeiro - A ninth single for the DJ in the countdown, not among his most successful though.
#67 Hoehner - 6 Bis 8 Stunden Schlaf - Despite that they are most famous with "Viva Colonia", the party kings have had their number one with "Wenn nicht jetzt, wann dann?" in 2008.

The Album Chart

In the album chart the dominance of Udo Lindenberg continues, while the re-issue of Pink Floyd's "Wish you were here" comes in at #4. David Garrett's "Legacy" debuts at #6, followed by the latest soundtrack to the Twilight saga at #8.

In Bulgarian Cinemas from 18 November 2011

Здрач Зазоряване: Част 1 / The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 - It's easy to start mocking at the Twilight saga and those who have found the previous three instalments appalling (and they have their strong reasons) will not be convinced by this almost final part either. The director may be fresh to the franchise, but the recipe is kept intact. Furthermore, the decision to break the last book into two separate movies, having in mind the lack of enough meat to sustain such a move, means that for two hours you'll only watch Bella and Edward throwing each other full of passion and longing looks.

So narratively speaking, Twilight 4.1 drags for so unbelievably long that even Harry Potter 7.1 can be felt as a compromised film in comparison. However, thus, the fans, and they, surprisingly or not, are millions, will find much to rejoice in Breaking Dawn Pt. 1 - the visuals are slick, the camera work steady, the costumes and the interiors/exteriors just taken out from a catalogue. What is more, the two hours allow the love story, the wedding, the honeymoon and ...(deleted for spoilers) to blossom.

Unfortunately, though Kristen Stewart continues to struggle in the central role (though I have to blame the book itself - rarely has such a melancholic and passive protagonist appeared on page/screen). In one of the scenes Bella asks Edward something such as "Don't you see how happy I am?", no Bella neither Edward nor the audience sees anything in your emotionless face. There is a saying in Bulgarian, which fits perfectly to describe Stewart's character - мърда, та дрънка. At the same time Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner are somehow okay, though any of their efforts are blown away by the unintentionally laughable lines and clumsy CGI work, especially regarding the wolves. But I have to stop here. If you're a fan, you'll devour it, if not, try something else in the cinema listings. It's not that you're given much of a choice this weekend... (A+) **

Bulgarian Boxoffice Update - Weekend 11-13 November

Immortals takes the crown with the excellent BGN 172,955, while Midnight in Paris fares respectively well with BGN 29,707. In a weekend when Bulgarian audiences seem to have returned to the multiplexes, the entire top ten registers relatively small declines.

Expect more details over the weekend.

Meanwhile don't forget to check out Twilight's (poor) review on Friday....
