German chart comments - Issue date - 29.07.2011

Turning into the definite summer anthem, Alexandra Stan's "Mr. Saxobeat" spends a fourth week on the top of the German singles chart. Once again Pitbull occupies the runner-up slot. Stan's reign may be challenged in the coming weeks by the rising interest in Tim Bendzko's great "Nur noch kurz die Welt retten", which this week goes up three to enter the top three for the first time since its release. We haven't had a German language number one since ages, so Tim's success would be more than welcome.

Just outside the top 10, DJ Antoine's "Welcome To St. Tropez" soars eight positions and lands at #12, a new peak for the song which entered the countdown 17 weeks ago.

In the top 30 let's not forget two new peak positions registered by Katy Perry and her "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" which goes up one to #17, as well as The Black Eyed Peas' "Don't Stop The Party", which inches up also one to #27.
Video - Katy

Once again there are no new entries inside the top 30, so that leaves us to "Ick liebe Dir", the peculiar collaboration between German rapper Sido and comedian Mario Barth, which can be found at #33.

Two positions below, Milow brings "Little In The Middle" the follow-up of his extremely and surprisingly successful "You and Me (In My Pocket)" (peak #3). The second single taken from the current album of the Belgian singer makes a respectable new entry but for now is his least performing single in Germany.

Following the misfire of "Cheap Comments" (peak #82), the third single from Beatsteaks' latest album makes it this week to the top 50. Thus "Automatic" lands at #43, just five positions above fellow German band's Jennifer Rostock and their newest single "Mein Mikrofon". Jennifer Rostock has actually never been considerably more successful with only "Du willst mir an die Wäsche" reaching #34 in 2004.

Marquess, the German band with Latino flavour, however has seen far rosier days in the top 100 than the miserable new entry of their latest summer offering "Chapoteo", which this week arrives at #70. The same can also be said to Söhne Mannheims, whose "Freiheit" marks the second least successful single of the guys ever next to "Power of the Sound" ten years ago.
Video - Marquess

As surprisingly this week's chart is flooded with new entries, here are the remaining ones:

52 Markus Becker feat. Ko & Ko - Helikopter

59 Ina Colada - Dos cervezas por favor Ina Colada

63 Samy Deluxe - Poesie Album

64 Within Temptation - Sinéad

66 Hurts - Better Than Love

76 Tim Toupet - Vater Abraham (… hat 7 Söhne)

92 Adam Hicks, Bridgit Mendler, Hayley Kiyoko & Naomi Scott - Determinate

The Album Chart

Before Amy Winehouse storms the LP chart next week, there is not much going on in the countdown. Adele's "21" returns to the top spot for yet another time, cementing its status as the biggest album of the year. Last week's champion - newcomer rapper Casper retreats surprisingly good, falling to #4 only. The highest new entry is "Time of My Life", the new album of 3 Doors Down, which comes in straight at #2. German carnival favourite band Brings brings its newest LP titled "Dat is Geil" at #7, while (wiki unknowns) Adya enter at #9.

По приятелски / Friends with Benefits - Cinema's history has seen it before (Deep Impact and Armageddon come into mind), but this year we have another clash (or sort of) of two surprisingly equally themed movies. Thus, several months after No Strings Attached, here comes Friends with Benefits. The premise is the same, the leading actors occupy (more-or-less) the same positions on the sexometer (oh, even Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis shared one and two "disturbing" scenes in Black Swan), so the question is - do we need another one? The answer is simple - definitely yes, as this Justin Timberlake / Kunis team-up is, even by an inch, the superior title. First, Justin Timberlake, sorry Ashton, is the more likeable lead, while his chemistry with Mila Kunis just sparkles on the screen. At the same time, the supporting cast brings to the film an unique flavour, with Woody Harrelson being the icing on the cake by deciding not to play his character straight. Another plus is the visual work, which is candy to the eye (watch out for the Hollywood sign scene), why the sharp R-rated script will (as the good R-rated movies do) split the audience in the middle. At the end, you'll laugh and smile and recommend the movie to your friends. Still, don't expect the film to stand the test of a more critical point of view. It has benefits, but outstanding they are not... (Alexandra) ***1/2

Капитан Америка: Първият отмъстител / Captain America: The First Avenger - Believe it or not, until next year's Avengers storm the theatres, the last (don't believe the title) avenger arrives in cinemas. Marvel definitely had a tough sell with this one - a superhero, with no actual superhero powers, and with a name symbolling (for better or worse) the United States. Fortunately for all comic movie fans, the studio has done its homework with "A" results. Setting this (inevitable) origin story during the WWII anchors the movie well - the magnificent sets, costumes, haircuts and even songs cater for the perfect atmosphere, in which Chris Evans will turn into the titular character. Though, some more cynical viewers may question the CGI work at the beginning, in which we have Chris' head put on a too skinny body, these scenes just bring more charm to the mix. Among the supporting cast, Tommy Lee Jones and Stanley Tucci have nothing exceptional on offer, but to watch the father of Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, in action will inject a considerable dose of fun for all fans of the entire Avengers' universe. Speaking of which, don't forget to stay until the end titles, hm, end, as this would be your first chance to see on the big screen the Avengers teaser, which really kicks ass. But let's return to the Captain -- a nice word also for Chris, who is now a veteran to the comic movie genre and feels good in the skin of the hero, while his nemesis Hugo Weaving doesn't disappoint (though I secretly wished he was a little bit more sinister). Unlike Harry Potter's last instalment, this time around the 3D experience is really worth it (watch out for the shield), while the computer gurus have done an amazing job with the effects. A perfect addition to this year's comic movie crop. (Forum Film) ****

Bulgarian Boxoffice Update - Weekend 22-24 July

The BO statistics was never so interesting
After its less-than-magical debut last weekend, the latest Harry Potter flick at least finds some ground this time around and unlike the USA (where it collapsed 72%) falls in Bulgaria by 52%. Not the best result out there (it's actually the worst decrease in the top 10), it is still enough to keep the movie on top for a second weekend. Furthermore, the total proceeds of BGN 453,886 only show that the title is attracting a good number of viewers during the weekdays.

Drawing itself even closer to the 1m threshold, the third part of the Michael Bay robots show-off Transformers stands at #2 with a fall of 27%.

At #3 we can find the highest new entry for the weekend as Winnie The Pooh makes the excellent result of BGN 28,361 for just three days in release. Though far from the boxoffice achievements of Kung Fu Panda 2 and Cars 2, actually no one has expected this old-fashioned, non-3D and (worst) adults-frightening Disney toon to make any bucks here. Now, it's time to bring out the calculators and find out how many jars of honey our little fellow would be able to buy...

The rest of the top ten comes as follows: (pay attention to the good holds of Bad Teacher and Hangover 2, as well as the impressive growth registered by Pirates 4, which has finally crossed the 2m barier).

#4 - Cars 2 - change - -18%, BO so far in BGN - 530,252
#5 - Bad Teacher - -5%, 362,797
#6 - The Hangover Part II - -1%, 651,503
#7 - Mr. Popper's Penguins - -30%, 122,607
#8 - Larry Crowne - -41%, 70,073
#9 - Pirates 4 - +30%, 2,013,897
#10 - Kung Fu Panda 2 - -13%, 701,007

The top ten is left by Super 8, which despite its tough-for-sale-in-BG premise (no stars, an extra retro feeling, no Vin Diesel) is going to end its run in the country with a result slightly north of BGN 200,000.

Oh, and let's not forget that French movie Ces amours-la also enters the BO chart this week, albeit at #15. It has a mere BGN 5,691 as a result, but having in mind it's an arthouse movie and has been played in only one cinema, there should be no surprised.

Compared to my last week's projections Winnie The Pooh came close to my BGN 25,000 expectation.

Next weekend's projections:

Captain America - 180,000, including previews
Friends with Benefits - 75,000
(1 BGN = USD 0.740 = EUR 0.511)

Мечо пух / Winnie The Pooh - To be honest, going to the screening of the newest adaptation of the classic novel I was quite prejudiced. I've never liked Pooh and his friends, even when I was a kid I thought (perhaps wrongfully) they were a bunch of idiots. So my expectations were set to the minimum, and, thankfully, I must say that I really enjoyed the latest old-style animation coming from the Disney studio. That, however, doesn't mean that the characters are not a group of naive idiots, but among all their stupidity lies a significant dose of charm, which will cast a spell on the little ones, and why not on one or two of their parents? And if you don't at least smile when the stomach of Pooh "cries" for honey, something is definitely wrong with you. Add to that the way (it's cruel) he treats Piglet, as well as pessimism icon Eeyore and more-than-retarded Owl, and you may have a great fun with this little film. On the plus side, the animation (despite old-fashioned) is great, the way the characters jump all over the pages of the book is imaginative and the scene when all but Piglet are trapped in a hole in the ground is pure comedy... Furthermore, the Bulgarian dubbing is for a change really good. Unfortunately, however, there are too many moments involving Tigger, whose charm and role in this fantastical world is completely lost on me. Hence no four stars. (Forum Film) ***1/2

Bulgarian Boxoffice Update - Weekend 15-17 July

On top but magic-less...
So, as most of Bulgarians stand simply above such childish and muscle-free flicks as the Harry Potter movies, the last instalment of the lucrative worldwide series arrives here with the non-magical BGN 147,171 over the weekend, or BGN 227,288 including two days of previews. Its results are nowhere near the BGN 350,572 debut of Transformers 3 or the BGN 600,539 weekend of Pirates 4. Of course, the facts that Harry Potter has swept records around the globe or that is one of the most well-reviewed films of the year do not count. This reminds me of Toy Story 3, which perhaps the best movie of the last year was, let's face it, a total flop only in Bulgaria. What is worse for HP is that the first non-3D part of Deathly Hallows debuted with BGN 182,707 last November, without any previews (or at least I don't remember any). And whether the decision to release the final movie only in 3D in Bulgaria, unlike the normal countries where there are plenty of 2D screenings, was the best, only time would tell.

And here is some statistics for the final results of the previous Potter movies in Bulgaria (in USD):
The Philosopher's Stone: $300,078
The Chamber of Secrets: $212,412
The Prisoner of Azkaban: $207,460
The Goblet of Fire: $252,160
The Order of the Phoenix: $284,191
The Half-blood Prince: $343,007
Deathly Hallows Part 1: $422,072

As Harry Potter was obviously no huge event in Bulgaria, the other movies in the top 10 register relatively good holds and some of them even rise by an inch. Thus Transformers 3 loses 47% and stands at #2 with BGN 810,440 so far, heading towards the 1bn threshold - a mark which HP8 will have difficulties to even come close.

Pixar's critic failure Cars 2 falls just 32%, showing once again the good legs animation has in the country. The Mater adventures have collected BGN 476,461 so far.

Further down the chart, Bad Teacher goes down by just 22%, Larry Crowne fares even better with a decrease of 18%, while Mr. Popper's Penguins goes up 1%. Hangover 2 slips by only 6%, while Fast Five advances by 8%. No logic in a non-logical country... (but let's stay focused).

The top 10 is left by X:Men: First Class, which despite its glowing reviews is about to end its run just shy of BGN 300,000 (it has BGN 240,487 so far).

Compared to my projections, Harry Potter came below my (already deliberately reduced) BGN 350,000 forecast.

Next weekend's forecast:
Winnie The Pooh  - BGN 25,000

(1 BGN = 0.50 EUR = 0.74 USD)

Austria's Top Economic News - Week 11-17 July

Monday
Austria's crane maker Palfinger said on Monday it had agreed to take over Russian sector player INMAN. The acquisition is expected to result in a considerable boost in Palfinger's business in Russia.
Steel company Voestalpine confirmed at the start of the week that it considers itself as the whistleblower in the current investigation of the German authorities in a possible price fixing in the railway market. Therefore, the firm expects not to be fined in the proceedings. However, according to media reports, Voestalpine was not the one to inform for the cartel practice.

Tuesday

Vienna Airport said the number of passengers grew 5.7% year-on-year to 1.926m in June. Freight volume however fell 12.8% to 21,315 tonnes. The number of serviced passengers in the first six months of the year rose 8.6% to 9.663m in annual terms.
Machinery group Binder+Co said Tuesday it had bought Italian sector company Comec in a move to expand its business in the Mediterranean region. No financial details were given.
Sanochemia Pharmazeutika revealed that it has entered into a distribution agreement with Italian Halley. The contract concerns Sanochemia's products for CT and MRT, as well as its Secrelux offering.
Oil and gas group OMV said it had closed the takeover of the E&P business of Petronas International in Pakistan. The deal will boost OMV's production in the country by 1,000 boe/d.
Wednesday
On a slow news day on Wednesday Beiersdorf, the German Nivea maker, said that its Austrian unit will withdraw from the business with decorative cosmetics. The subsidiary will concentrate on skin and bodycare products.
Thursday
Sugar, starch and fruit group Agrana said on Thursday its sales rose 13.4% in annual terms to EUR 612.9m in the first quarter of fiscal 2011/12. The profit soared to EUR 43.1m from EUR 19.9m. The company said it benefited from the good market conditions and the implemented optimisation measures.
Austria's inflation rate remained at a high level in June, standing at 3.3% under the country's definition and at 3.7% under the EU one. It was boosted once again by prices for energy and food.
Builder Strabag said it had raised its stake in German Josef Möbius Bau to 100% from 70%. The move will enable Strabag to boost its hydroengineering activities.
On Thursday one of the most anticipated sales in the Austrian banking sector became a fact. Thus, Russian Sberbank has entered into a term sheet concerning the acquisition of Volksbank International, the eastern European unit of OeVAG. The Romanian activities of VBI will not be part of the deal.

Friday
Friday was the busiest corporate news day last week. Early in the morning Lenzing Technik, part of fibre producer Lenzing, said it had fully taken over its joint venture LENO Electronic.
The Bank Austria economists continue to be less optimistic for the prospects before the Austrian economy as the sentiment on the most important export markets has worsened. In addition the high inflation rate of above 3% is curbing consumption, the analysts said.
On Friday it also became clear that there are talks with three companies interested in A-Tec, the collapsed business empire of Mirko Kovats.
On Friday evening the results from the latest stress test of Austria's banking sector were published. As expected only OeVAG failed to pass the test, which measures the capital adequacy of the banks. Erste Group, Raiffeisen International, as well as Italy-owned Bank Austria all passed the examination carried out by the country's central bank. Still the results do not take into account the measures taken by OeVAG to improve its capital ratios, such as the announced on Thursday sale of its subsidiary VBI.

German chart comments - Issue date - 15.07.2011

Quiet days for the German singles chart as not only Alexandra Stan makes a second week at the summit but the only three new entries in the entire top 100 are outside the top 60. In the top three, apart from Alexandra Stan, Jennifer Lopez stands comfortably at the runner-up slot, while the "Party Rock Anthem" of LMFAO moves up to #3.
Video  - Al. Stan

Following a full week in the shops, David Guetta's second proposal from his yet to be released LP shoots itself to #5 from #11, showing how unbelievably popular the French DJ and producer is. "Little Bad Girl" has thus matched the success of previous single "Where Them Girls At" (this week at #22).

This week Don Omar & Lucenzo continue their journey to the upper reaches of the countdown and their summer smash "Danza Kuduro" moves up eight positions and lands just outside the top 10.

At #19 Frida Gold's "Wovon sollen wir träumen" has finally passed the top 20 boundary and the German band can congratulate itself with its first ever top 20 single.

Outside the top 20, Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night" goes up by only a place but makes a new peak at #21, while DJ Antoine follows closely with "Welcome To St. Tropez" at #23.

A position behind the Swiss DJ, British band Coldplay rises six places with "Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall", which can now benefit at least from the fact that it has a video.

A special mentioning also to Pigeon John, whose "The Bomb" rises #42 - #33 and maybe the US musician will soon have his first top 30 single in Germany.

Let's also not forget the re-entry of "Don't Stop", the 2002 song of Red Hot Chili Peppers, whose resurrected success perhaps can be sought in its use as a ring entrance anthem for heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko.

And finally here come the three new entries with videos:

69 Norman Langen - Pures Gold
Video
83 Velile - Injabulo
Video
84 Alex Gaudino feat. Kelly Rowland - What A Feeling

The Album Chart

Somewhat surprisingly Limp Bizkit's "Gold Cobra" secures itself a second week on the top of the LP chart, which shows that nowadays only Germans remember who Fred Durst and co. were. The only new entry in the top ten belongs to New Zealand's singer Brooke Fraser, who already has a top ten single with "Something in The Water". Her album "Flags" goes straight in at #6. At #8 the young Il Divo, or more precisely Il Volo bring their first CD up from #17 last week.

In Bulgarian Cinemas from July 15

Хари Потър и Даровете на смъртта: Част 2 / Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 2 - Let me say something straight - this is a review reserved for Harry Potter fans. Both book and film ones. If you've been somehow immune to the charm of the greatest franchise (with more than three parts) in the cinema history so far, you don't need to read any further. Just remove three stars off the rating and go and do whatever you do in your non-magical world. But if you are among the millions who have eagerly waited for every single of the eight instalments and have been onboard this more-than-wonderful adventure from year one, this is the film for you. The film to put the definite end and it does it with style and a magnitude of powerful emotions...

After the first part of The Deathly Hallows slightly disappointed me, and not because of its slow development but due to the omission of favourite moments from the book (the movie, however, has (of course) grown on me on further viewings), I feared that this could happen with part II. Nevertheless, the moment the first trailer arrived and the critics (you know how difficult to please they are) started saying it's the best from the franchise, I already knew that I'm in for something big here... And I was right...

The first shots of the film - dialogue-free and full of dead calmness crowning over Hogwarts with only Severus Snape watching over the school's innocent pupils - will grab you and never let you go. Speaking of Snape (who has been recently selected by the readership of two film magazines as the best character in the entire saga) - if you've read the books, you'd know that this is his hour, the moment of the great revelations. And if you asked for more Alan Rickman in films one to seven, you'll finally get what you really deserve. Without revealing any spoilers, I'd only say that the Moment is truly emotional... The Internet has already launched a campaign for the great actor to get an Oscar nod, so be sure to join the league as well.

Regarding the remaining characters, all of your favourite teachers or students appear. Many have a real stand-out moment - Minerva McGonagall is truly terrific (as if Maggie Smith has waited for ten years to release her real power), Molly Weasley and Bellatrix Lestrange say the B word, while even Filius Flitwick and Horace Slughorn have a moment, albeit considerably short, to shine. Of course others, such as Sybil Trelawney or Percy Weasley have entered the category "blink and you'll miss them", but the fans of the books will know why they are there. This leads to my observation that the Potter series are made and targeted mainly to the book aficionados and that in somewhat curious way books and films are interrelated. If you know the book by heart, the movie is just like a puzzle with million pieces - it doesn't matter if a character or a thing appears for just seconds, you'll enjoy the only glimpse of it. But be warned, the Dumbledore backstory has more-or-less ended on the editing room floor. And you'll not miss it.

Among the main players, Ron, Hermione, Ginny, Luna and most importantly Neville (you'll be surprised by the real focus on him, even compared to the book), feel perfectly at home during the movie. However, we all know that it is, and should be the Harry vs. Voldermort show. And the two, helped by the cast and crew, have prepared an outstanding face-off for you. Ralph Fiennes has enormous fun being the bad and twisted guy, while Daniel Radcliffe will finally convince all naysayers why he is the real and only Potter.

Speaking of the story, perhaps this film has the most linear structure, there are a few grand moments in the dungeons of Gringotts and then it's the battle for Hogwarts all over the place. Furthermore, it's one of the most faithful adaptations, with crisps of dialogue taken directly from the source novel. This time around the movie is not only extremely dark, but it's also brutal - there will be blood, skeletons, dead people, grotesque bodies and a really dangerous snake... The wand duels are supreme, the set pieces, albeit destroyed during the film, need an Oscar, and though the 3D is unnecessary, it doesn't annoy. It's obvious that David Yates, who has started taking care of the franchise since movie number five, has either deliberately saved his best skills for last or has just grown into a real craftsman. A special mentioning for the soundtrack too - though I really regretted that legendary composer John Williams will not return for the last part, his music has come back and when the end arrives with the notes from his Hedwig's Theme, your hearts would be filled with joy... Bring on the memories from part 1! And this is just one of the several nice touches that put a strong end to the franchise and really wrap up the story. (To his credit composer Alexander Desplat has done a magnificent job as the music for the film will enchant you from the very beginning).

But it's not only the excellent cast, or the amazing production designs, or the sublime effects that matter, it's the fact that J.K. Rowling has made a really thrilling story, spanning over seven books, a story pulsing with universal themes such as sacrifice, the price of friendship and utmost - with the power of love. It's the love of the thousands crew members who brought the entire world to life, and it's the love of the fans, who have grown with these characters, laughed with them, cared for them and invested in them. And fortunately they were not betrayed. At the end, as a famous rock star puts it - there'll be no dry eye in the house.... (Alexandra) *****

Дори дъжда / Tambien la lluvia (Spain, France, Mexico) (Limited) - Two movies of Van Kris are released in a limited distribution this weekend, and of course there have been no advance screenings. Hence no reviews and better for it, as the HP one has become really really long...

Bulgarian Boxoffice Update - Weekend 8-10 July

C'mon, let's storm the BG boxoffice
There is nothing really going on in this week's boxoffice as Transformers 3 keeps control at the top spot despite a massive fall of 73%, which perhaps is due to its five-day debut a week earlier. So far the Michael Bay-directed spectacle has made BGN 644,658, which is not bad for only two weeks in the cinemas. The movie is now on its way to become the third one-million crosser for its distributor in Bulgaria in 2011, next to Fast Five and Pirates 4. The third instalment has also already surpassed the final results of T1 and T2 combined...

The second position is held by Cars 2, which this week shows a considerable fall of 58% and has the good but not the extraordinary BGN 409,472 so far. Its results are however enough to make it the most successful Pixar movie in Bulgaria ever.

At #3 Bad Teacher collapses with 56% but already has BGN 270,559, which I think is quite enough for several new pair of tits...

A position beneath lands Pirates 4, which shows little signs of fading away and with a fall of 19% is crossing the 2m barrier as we speak.

The first and only new entry of the week (yes, Hollywood is not producing films good enough for our distributors so they have nothing on hand to release) arrives at #5. The Tom Hanks-directed Larry Crowne collects BGN 15,877 over the weekend and BGN 23,923 including a week of previews. An unremarkable result for an unremarkable movie.

The only film to go out of the top 10 is Fast Five, which despite not released in one of the two cinema chains in Bulgaria has managed to collect above BGN 1m in its total run so far. Thus with certainty it is one of the best results (or why not the most spectacular in the past few years) for Universal in Bulgaria. (I love them, you know).

Compared to my last week projections, Larry Crowne came suspiciously close to my BGN 25,000 forecast. (I should try the lottery next)

Next weekend's projections: (the biggest of them all)
Harry Potter 8 - BGN 350,000, including two days of previews

(1 BGN = EUR 0.52 = USD 0.74)

In BG Cinemas from July 8

Лари Краун / Larry Crowne - It was not long ago when an A-list star could carry a film on his/her own and make it a huge boxoffice and even a critical hit. But how times have changed in just a blink. Look at Larry Crowne, the only new movie to hit our screens this week (which leaves a lot of work for the Missed Opportunities section, but that's another topic). So here comes the film, which has not one but two major Hollywood players in the face of Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts. And at the end the film was a commercial flop, and couldn't manage to impress the critics either... So what has gone wrong? First it's the story - sweet but naive, charming but witless and lacking, as they say it, a bite. A crucial social problem, i.e. unemployment, is handled too easily, which would have been okay, if Tom Hanks, who happens to be the director of the piece, has decided to put some (Juno-like) irony or some real depth in his character. However, he chooses to focus more on the sideline actors, and while some of them are good (TV comedy fans will especially enjoy two of the second-tier personalities), others such as Cedrick The Entertainer and his wife are just useless. Still, the addition of George Takei as a professor on economy is just a marvel to behold. Julia Roberts looks fine in the second core role, but though there are shades of Bad Teacher in her, nothing more lies behind her motivations and what, apart from alcohol, have managed to make her change herself after the encounter with Tom Hanks is difficult to fathom out. At the end though, it's not a bad film, neither it is great. If you are among the few who go and watch it on the big screen (and if you are above 30 years old), you'll probably feel excellent while watching it. Nevertheless, the moment you step out of the cinema hall, you'll just miss your 3D glasses...(A+) ***

German chart comments - Issue date - 8.07.2011

It was expected as early as last week, but the resurging interest in Jennifer Lopez's "On The Floor" had prevented then Alexandra Stan to reach the summit in Germany. Now, all is settled and done as the Romanian beauty rises #3-#1 to claim the crown. Following O-Zone's mega-success in 2004 (yes, they are actually from Moldova), now the honour goes to Stan to justify the statement that Romanians have advanced considerably in their music industry. Her success comes after last year Edward Maya scored one of the hits of the summer with "Stereo Love" and is also hot on the heels of Inna, who has conquered UK and other parts of Europe, though still lacks a top 20 in Germany.

Down in the top 10 two peaks worth mentioning - at #6 Lady Gaga's "Edge Of Glory" advances a position, proving my assumption that it's gonna be a hit and at #7 Tim Bendzko's "Nur noch kurz die Welt retten" rises from #9.

The highest new entry of the week comes from superstar Rihanna. "California King Bed" is the fourth single taken from her current album and by entering at #9 it becomes the 16th!!! top ten song of the singer in Germany. An achievement surpassed only by Britney Spears and Madonna in terms of solo female power.

Only ten days ago the music TV channels welcomed the fact that David Guetta was ready with the video for his "Where Them Girls At" (this week down to #20) and that they can actually rotate the hit, which peaked at #5 without any real promotion. Now, however, the record company decides to release in a rush a second single from the latest, still to come out, album of the French DJ. Thus, Guetta's collaboration with Taio Cruz & Ludacris "Little Bad Girl" enters new at #11. Should I say that it has no video?

After last week we had only four new entries in the entire top 100, this time around there are eight in the top 50 alone.

Jason Derülo, the current king of the UK charts, brings in the pilot single of his second album at #14. "Whatcha Say" and "In My Head", the first two offerings from Jason's debut LP reached the top 10, a feat which "Don't Wanna Go Home" will have to match in the weeks to come.

Four positions beneath Derulo enters the latest discovery from Deutschland sucht den Superstar. Sebastian Wurth ranked fifth in the final for 2011 but that didn't stop him and his producers from releasing a single - a move which turns successful as Sebastian now has a top 20 single on his account. Only time will tell whether he really is the German Justin Bieber.

Expectedly, Don Omar's summer smash "Danza Kuduro" soars 19 positions this week and enters the top 20 for the first time at #19. The summer vibe is really up to the maximum.

At #22 Katy Perry arrives with the fifth single of her second album, already a home of four top ten singles. "Last Friday Night", and especially its video, is a welcome addition to the charts, though for now (understandably) being outside the top 20.

If you by now haven't noticed that DJ Antoine's "Welcome To St. Tropez" is slowly climbing towards the top 20 over the past few months, you probably haven't paid much attention. The dance anthem rises this week to #24.

Ending their remarkable top-10 series of singles The Black Eyed Peas enter this week at #28 with "Don't Stop The Party". The party may have not stopped but this is the second song of BEP to miss the top 20 in their Fergie years. The other one was last year's "Imma Be", which reached #49.

At #38 there is a return to the charts for ex-Spice girl Melanie C. "Rock Me" comes four years after "This Time" stalled at #69. And let's not forget that unlike her native UK, Melanie is much loved in Germany, where it had a number one hit in the face of "First Day of My Life" in 2005.

Two more new entries in the top 100:

#42 Pigeon John - The Bomb

#78 Brandyn Hwood Bordeaux - Could It Be You
Video

The Album Chart
The changes atop the album chart may have shocked many but the truth is that rock fans and teenage girls should not be underestimate. I'm speaking of course for the fact that Limp Bizkit's newest album "Gold Cobra" shoots directly at the top, while Sarah Engels' debut "Heartbeat" follows close behind. The problem is that the much anticipated and heralded album of Beyonce "4" enters as low as #5. Actually we shouldn't be so surprised as the facts are that in Germany there was nothing to support the release of her latest album - a proper and good single I mean...
At the same time last week's #1 - In Flames' "Sounds Of A Playground Fading" collapsed to #12 this time around.

NO HANNA/MONTE CARLO/CHANGE-UP IN BULGARIA!!!

Putting a bullet in BG cinema distribution
!UPDATE! - The Change-Up and Crazy Stupid Love will be actually released in Bulgaria. Fingers crossed that the distributors will soon make features like this one useless. And let's hope that everything is okay in the Universe now ;)

So, unfortunately, the series of cancelled cinema distributions in Bulgaria continues at a full speed and will even accelerate in the next months. And for people like me, who hate downloading movies illegally or worse watch them on the small screens, this trend continues to be extremely irritating. Add the small number of actual premieres, and you'll see that instead of going forward the business here is going backwards, albeit the increased ticket sales...

Hanna - After several delays in the Bulgarian premiere schedule, one of the best reviewed movies this year has taken the WC road. It comes from director Joe Wright, whose excellent Pride & Prejudice and the now classic Atonement were released here (thanks Sunny & Prooptiki for that, they were Universal titles and in the current situation would have never been released in Bulgarian cinemas). His previous title Soloist suffered bad decisions at its studio and did not reach our shores (thanks Prooptiki for that) and now it's time for his latest to be also stuck in the closet. Hanna, which for sure would have insulted the more fainted hearts, tells the story of a girl assassin, chased by the merciless Cate Blanchett. Apart from her, the remaining cast is definitely solid stuff - Saoirse Ronan, Eric Bana... The trailer really kicks ass and just imagine how it would all have looked in the cinema hall... Several months ago I wrote that Hanna would not be released here, despite all promises of the distributor. I just hate to be right for these things... ("Distributor" in Bulgaria - Alexandra)

Monte Carlo - Let's be clear here - I know that this Selena Gomez flick would have sucked - it looks like a mesh-up of the bad Disney days when Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan were considered stars, but go and explain this to the little girls out there. Shouldn't they deserve a movie with their teen idol? And who has even thought of putting posters of Monte Carlo in the cinemas. This movie never actually stood the chance of getting distribution here...("Distributor" in Bulgaria - Alexandra)

The Change-Up - Oh, here comes my favourite studio in Hollywood. If you read my blog from time to time, you'll know at whose logo I'm looking right now... Another month, another Universal title cancelled... The fact that it stars Ryan Reynolds, Jason Bateman, Olivia Wilde and Leslie Mann doesn't convince the studio and its distributor in Bulgaria that it has to be released here. And yes, it's another R-rated comedy which will be available only on the Internet, just after Your Highness, Paul, Bridesmaids... I've never thought that I'm gonna miss Sunny or Prooptiki...("Distributor" in Bulgaria - Forum Film)

Expect soon features on the 99%-certain cancellation of the cinema distribution of Hoodwinked 2, The Thing, Wanderlast and even Crazy Stupid Love... The list is piling up!

BG Boxoffice Update - Weekend 1-3 July

Blowing the BO in pieces
Expectedly, the 3D extravaganza that is Transformers 3 has swept the Bulgarian boxoffice this weekend with the more-than-welcome BGN 326,316, or BGN 350,572 including previews. It thus becomes the biggest opening weekend in Bulgaria for 2011, apart of course from Pirates 4 from May. Moreover, according to Forum Film, the distributor of Transformers, its premiere has been the biggest debut of a Paramount title in the country, beating Shrek 4's BGN 255,658 from last year. As records around the world are currently being smashed at every second (blame the cinema chain expansion for that) and since there is no official statistics in Bulgaria for the past, we cannot take the aforementioned statement as a definite truth. Still, this doesn't change the fact that the result is really monstrous.

Retreating to #2 this week, last week's champion Cars 2 slows down with 31%, bringing a total of BGN 308,731 in its trunk. At #3 Bad Teacher shows little signs for fading fast as the movie falls by a mere 23% in its second week. Seeing the more-than-stable performance of Hangover 2 over the last few weeks (this time falling by 13% only), it shows that Bulgarians are also embracing the R-rated comedy wave that stormed the global cinemas this summer. And, no, I won't mention Bridesmaids and Change-up again... (oops).

The other new proposal this weekend comes in at #5. Mr. Popper's Penguins, relying more on Jim Carrey's name, rather than any other hit potential, collects BGN 34,058 in its freezer (including previews). It's unremarkable, but in the face of Transformers, quite a good result. Expect the movie figures to be stable in the weeks to come.

This week the top 10 is left by Bulgarian title Lora from Morning Till Evening, which with its above BGN 75,000 earnings and in view of its modest budget can be considered a significant success. Another successful movie also says goodbye to the first ten in the face of The Tree of Life. The latter, with its BGN 107,642 so far, may be considered of one of the most profitable arthouse movies to receive a broad distribution on these shores.
Compared to my last week's projections, Transformers was close to my forecast of BGN 300,000 (FF - I should get a movie memorabilia now!), while Mr. Popper's Penguins came significantly below my BGN 55,000 expectation.

Next weekend projections (the start of the slow season):
Larry Crowne - BGN 25,000 (including previews)

(1 BGN = EUR 0.52 = USD 0.74)
